A revisit. Found it this time using map on here. Parked at Straight Soley, then headed west along footpath towards Crooked Soley. Fabulous names, worth extra point. At the track running south headed in that direction. Rises gradually, just past where it levels out is an opening into a field on right, west. Count about 100 paces and pillar is in the hedge on the northern field boundary. Vegetation covered the small gap in the hedge but it was just visible. Bit of a scramble to get photographs. No views from pillar. Interesting recessed flush plate. Probably some significance to the high FB number. Pleased to log this after going away empty handed last time, 4/9/21.

Parked at Crooked Soley, plenty of parking, then walked up passed horse stud farm and down bridal way until a gap on the right. Walked down side of hedge on right about 100m and trig was in hedge. Someone must have done a clearance job as it wasn't too difficult to find as in previous logs.

Will have to come back another time with a more recent map. Used 1967 OS map, seemed it ought to be in the middle of a field. Having read other comments, I wasn’t looking in the correct place. A farmer on a quad bike asked if I was lost, quite friendly but didn’t know of a trig point anywhere nearby. Wrongly assumed removed. Will update when found.

Some advice for future concrete chasers who are thinking of attempting this one in the summer: forget it! Pillar is deeply embedded in hedgerow which gets extremely overgrown this time of year. I walked past it twice and missed it, and it was only when I sneaked a look into the next field to see where the fence intersected the hedge (this is where the pillar is) that I managed to find the right place and catch a glimpse of it. Even then, it was so well protected by brambles that I struggled to even photograph it. I couldn't see the FB, and barely discerned the spider. May revisit to get proper photos in the winter.

Parked on a layby on the S side of the B4192 just to the W of Chilton Foliat. Walked up Crabtree Close (labelled "Manor Farm" on the OS Explorer map) then continued N up the path until we came to the big thick tall hedge, then walked along the hedgeline (NW direction) on the S side of the hedge until where the trig was supposed to be. Couldn't find the trig due to the thick hedge. Gave up after a long search & headed back. Field to the S of the trig had lots of crops in it. Went to The Wheatsheaf in Chilton Foliat for a cold drink! Might try this one again in the winter when the hedge will be bare. Revisited 9 November 2014: found it this time! It's on the S side of the hedge. Field had just grass in it. Hedge had been cut and was bare as winter is fast approaching, hence the trig was visible. Did some tidying up of the branches around the trig with my secateurs. FB faces E. Trig in good condition, concrete centre plug. This was the last trig on the Newbury & Hungerford OS Explorer map to be bagged, so celebratory drinks were had at The Tally Ho, Hungerford Newtown afterwards. Thirsty work, this trigpointing!

What a busy but enjoyable week with walking, trigging, gigs, & football. Just about cleared my head following last night's Deep Purple gig at the Roundhouse, but just to be sure, I grabbed great lungfuls of fresh air as I loped up through the track & fields from Chilton Foliat village to secure this trigpoint, which was secreted within a particularly thorny hedge. In good condition, with cap plugged & all sight holes closed, and much covered in lichen. Then on to watch STFC 2-0 Notts County - unbelievably already in the top six despite an almost complete change of personnel for this season. And tomorrow?: it's Swarbrick & Carthy at the Turner Sims... Variety is the spice and all that!

Can drive down the track past the farm/hamlet at Crooked Soley, although ruts get bigger when you reach the track going south. Horse area, so people are very keen to stop trespassing near their "rather expensive" horses. Follow track south, the turn back along hedge on the south side and the trig is easily found.

In the hedge, a shortish walk off the track, and not obvious until you get right to it. There's parking about 100m east of where the track joins the B4192. As I walked back from this one, I passed a bunch of people. I was half worried they were the family that owned the land coming to reprimand me for trespass, but no. I think they had noticed me walk off the path and just wanted to know what I was doing. One of them asked me if I was orienteering! I wasn't, but funnily enough I will be tomorrow. There'll even be a trigpoint (TP4884) on the map!

It is there! Just inside the hedge on the north side of the arable field. I walked past it three times without spotting it. But it is only just inside the hedge, and easy to 'see'. The challenge is to realise you are looking at it. Having found it, it is in vgc. On the way back to the track I paced it. It was just under 100 good paces. You will not find it from the pasture on the other side of the hedge. I increased the score a bit simply on the basis it has such a splendid name.

Couldn't find this one. According to the map, it's in the middle of the field line. In reality, the field line is an impenetrable hedge about four feet wide. Being high summer, all of the undergrowth has grown up and despite looking both sides, we were unable to spot the trig. Perhaps it's easier in the winter. OS list the FB as 11395.
