Last time I went to Castle Donington it was to see some rock. 32 years later... well, still true but this time it's a concrete obelisk rather than an AC/DC gig. Am I getting dull in my old age? Accessed through the wide gap in the wooden fence next to the now-overgrown gate, and even with my usual sturdy clothing choices, I got ripped to shreds by the thick and sturdier brambles which have claimed this trig as their own! View isn't quite as non-existent as I'd expected, though, and it gets a plus point for having the highest FB number I've yet found on a pillar. As others have mentioned, there's a crack at the base just below the FB.

Heavily cracked just below the FB, and the missing centre cap has been filled in. This pillar is a replacement. Pillar history: Original pillar built on the 26th of November 1936, at a cost of £4 11s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1978. Rebuilt in 1979 and given a new FB number - 11801.

The wife really enjoyed this one! For many hours she has sat in laybys, farm gates, grass verges, etc. but this time she could marvel at the planes landing on one of the main runways at East Midlands Airport while I exercised my 'right to roam' in the adjacent field! When I had a chat to the plane spotters and told them what I was doing, there was a certain amount of head-scratching and 'Oh, I see' - ing. As Father Ted says, we are a strange lot, the British! Anyway, this one has a crack across it and a concrete plug replacement. Only the N sighthole is closed. There is some white paint. The concrete base is exposed all round and badly so on the W face - it may be in danger of toppling in future. In pasture field on top of what is [was?] the reservoir, presumably.

Very wet. The field was very muddy. The end of the lane was full of plane spotters.

This no through road is very popular with plane spotters. What a strange hobby they have. I suppose they would say that touring the country looking at blocks of concrete is sad but it does give you exercise. Not that there is too much exercise involved in bagging this one as its on a grassy mound about 20 yards inside a bovine grazing field. A horizontal crack has appeared at about flush bracket level.
