I came here due to this being the original YOSM001 Ye Olde Survey Monument virtual geocache. Sadly archived recently. I wasn't sure that I would find it but I saw the recent mark on the fence and found it straight away.

I feared this one may be tricky to find as I approached as there was evidence of tractor tyre marks and other workings in the immediate area, may be further repairs to the fence. The bolt however was easy to locate and just had a bit of dead grass over the top of it. The hole was somewhat narrower than when Jon had dome some excavations a number of years ago so I tried to dig it back to its original size. I also wrote a B for Bolt on the fence post which it is aligned to. It is the last of the new fence posts - but that assumes that no more new fencing is put up soon.

Did this one on our way down to "Weston's super Sunday soiree GC57TXA", As last post this is a must for any YoSM hunter. So glad Spunky Spider placed a concrete block on top of it to help pin point it, made it a very easy find. We had wanted this to be our first but second is not too bad.

Did this one on my way down to Bude in Cornwall. It's a must for any YoSM hunter. Parked on the very busy crossroads and spent ages trying to blindly find it by prodding about with my walking pole. Once my son had pointed out I was on the wrong corner of 4, we jointly found it quite quickly by a previous photograph. We noted the wooden post with a knot about a foot down from the top. After photographing my walking pole and GPS beside it, I placed a concrete block on top of it to help pin point it for the next finder.

Did not find this one whilst on way to Somerset levels, and were collecting an odd cache or two on the way. This was to be our first YSM and seemed very appropriate, sadly due to the vegetation growth since last found, almost a year?, and the fact that it was pouring down, this one was a DNF. Hadn't realised I would need contents of my garden shed plus to get it.

Found the Surface Block fine (thanks Monki for leaving it uncovered) but the Berntsen eluded me, despite protracted prodding around with a sharp steel stick. The blue post has indeed gone, but the fence has recently been re-erected, and the SB lies just in front of the new left-hand post as you look at them from the road (see photo)

6th and final trig-point(s) of the second day of my expedition. Two for the price of one, here. A surface block and just a couple of yards away, a Berntsen. They are in the wide verge at the junction of the B3129 and B3130. If you can find the braced fence-post with the blue paint mark on it, you’re probably standing on the surface block. Both reference points are in good condition although the securing screw for the Berntsen cover is missing. The only views are of a minor cross-roads and not very exiting.

The bolt was easily spotted close to the hedge on a wide verge of a fairly busy crossroads. A bernsten lies about 4 feet to the southeast; they were both nicely excavated. To the north east lies the wooded slopes of Ashton, Belmont and Wraxall Hills; to the south are Barrow and Backwell Hills.

Strangely most folk have found a Bernsten here, I followed the OS plan and found a conventional Surface Block - as on the OS website. It was well buried - I only found it after prodding with my trusty tent peg. I removed the long grass, bindweed and soil to reveal the block. I left it clear, but I didn't do a serious excavation job, so it will return to nature. It is to the W of the braced post (which was well-enveloped with greenery, but is identifiable as it is older than the other posts). Looking at the photos, the Berntsen seems to be to the SW of the post. Everything was very overgrown, so I was delighted to find something! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera, so no photo.

After failing with the Bernsten I didn't expect to find this, so it was a surprise when I did, relatively easily, as it wasn't overgrown, just covered with grass mowings. However, is this a surface block? I couldn't understand how to get the OS link to work [they have changed it] and I think this is something that I got completely tied up with near Bath last year when I found one of these and a proper Surface Blaock only a few feet away. I would like to get the OS site to work and come back here with a proper sketch.
