The steep muddy paths in the woods are not a place to walk in gripless trainers and quite cut up in places by bikes and horses. From parking area at W end of Errington Wood on a sunny day KJ

There’s room to park at the end of the residential road north of the wood. From there, there is a well marked path, with steps on the steepest part, south through the wood. Turn east when you reach the top and follow the wide track along the field’s edge to the pillar which is set on a small ‘hillock’. It’s mostly obscured by ferns but once through them, it’s fairly clear on the other side. The pillar has a couple of large chips out of the top edge at the end of two of the spider’s ‘arms’ and the spider it’s self, has many striations cut into it. These look old and there aren’t matching cuts in the centre plug so maybe they were there from the beginning. The views from the pillar are best to the south as the northern aspect is obscured by trees but there are some good views to the north, looking out over the coast from the track a few yards west of the pillar.
