From Great Gonerby, to start, over stile at east edge of village and north along footpath. Then west around field edge and then north along a farm track for about 700 metres. Track signed as a private road but passed a few dog walkers so seems to be ok. At junction of tracks, head west towards derelict barn, underneath electricity pylon. Over gate into field to west of derelict building pillar near to a mast compound. Fairly good views towards south. Better views to north from field near building.

Wish I’d read the reports below about all those who drove up to the track junction, or even to the ruins of the barn! As it was I walked all the way in from Great Gonerby as the shadows lengthened but still with plenty of targets on my days ‘hit list’ still to complete. Ah well, this is as much about exercising the dog (and myself) and the walk was enjoyable. Trig sits in a rather scruffy location between aforementioned ruin and ugly comms mast, with what might have been extensive views N obscured by a hedge. The views SW are ok, but this could/once was have been so much more…

I had no problems walking up from Great Gonerby, no activity in the fields because the cereal crops had already been harvested, and no cattle in the pillar's field. The pillar is in good condition and doesn't show the animal rub marks or muddy trodden area usually found around a pillar in a cattle field. Good views, especially around the western arc.

(1172) Took the track between two houses down to the pillar. Marked at various intervals as being private, but I had been informed by a local that it wouldn't be a problem to walk down, as it was regularly used by dog walkers etc. Pre-warned that the field where the pillar stands is used for cows - perhaps unsurprisingly it was empty at this time of year. Never even had to clamber over the gate, as that was jammed slightly open. Pillar in fine condition, with some good views to be had. A nice one to tick off the list. Pillar history: Built on the 27th of May 1938, at a cost of £4 18s 3d. Last maintained by the OS in June of 1978.

Last one en route from Lincoln to Gloucestershire. Being short of time I drove down the stony track NNE from Belton Lane in Great Gonerby and turned W on to the grass track as far as the derelict building. A little bit dodgy in a car with fairly low clearance but made it nonetheless. From here, on foot, I hopped over the gate and dashed over the grassy field (minding the cowpats) to the pillar about 50 metres away. Pillar in good condition; metal cap with deep indented letters; FB faces NE; SE sighthole open, others plugged.

A bitterly cold North east wind. For some reason the rest of my family decided to have a post Christmas shopping spree rather than join me. Interesting old building next to the Trig. As for the mast it could be worse theres one on the A52 disguised as a pine tree. Great Gonerby was the haunt of highwaymen and a strange practice of pelting the church clock with mud, stones or snowballs.

Here\'s a clue Follow the track across the fields from the road and it will take you to the Trig.
