A report on the local BBC lunch time news today saying the fort is up for auction later today with a guide price of 1.5 million pounds. Will the pillar survive the trauma?? Further update - the site sold with planning permission for housing. The embankment on the seaward side will be demolished to give the residents extensive views over the Solent. So that would appear to be it for TP3234.

Thank you Trigger monster ! I only attempted this Trig as a result of reading your recent log and might not have tried otherwise. The pillar is on a raised mound to the left of the fort compound as you approach through the golf course. The fort itself looks fairly grim and unwelcoming at first, ringed with anti-climb paint fences with a barbed wire top. However, access can be gained on the South side by sliding under one of the fence panels on the pebble beach. Once inside the fence it's a back-track about 50 metres or so until a short climb through gorse and bramble takes you up to the pillar. Decent views over to the Isle of Wight and down to the golf course. I think the access route described would be the easiest, although it does look possible to sneak in at the main gate as the barbed wire top has been removed. There were a few dog walker types about, but no-one seemed particularly bothered about what I was doing.

Was in two minds about whether to visit this location as having looked at previous recent logs, looked like a no go with double fences and strict security. However, very pleased to have made the effort to do so. Pleasant drive along the shoreline road from the west. Pulled in at the gated entrance by footpath leading south across the golf course, name of fort is on the gate. Quite a few golfers around. Lovely morning. Probably bleak in a howling south westerly gale in the rain. About two hundred metres from the fort, the pillar is visible on the top of the bank on the left. At the security gate, there were several chinks in the security as there was no barbed wire on top of one side and there was a possibility of squeezing through a gap in the mesh. A couple of walkers stopped and spoke to me. I asked if there was a way in, one said no, the other said local youths might have damaged some of the fences. Decided to walk the perimeter then return to the gate for another look. On the southern side of the fort, a few of the security fence panels were lying on the shingle. Oh! What luck. A short walk back to the east side of the mound although lots of hazards inside the fenced area, bits of barbed wire, boards with nails sticking up, scratchy gorse and brambles. A steep scramble up the mound. Didn’t hang around and kept low but job done. Chuffed. Walkers saw me come out of the enclosure on their way back. A sheepish nod. Only noticed the missing chunk from the top of the pillar on the photograph. Pretty good views from the pillar across the golf course, The Solent and towards Portsmouth.

Pleasant walk down from the Stokes Bay car park. Fort looking a bit derelict although some scaffolding etc erected for the supposed redevelopment of this Grade II* listed structure that seems to have stalled. There's a web site dated 2011 that describes the plan for 22 3-storey luxury houses. Fort was one of those erected by Lord Palmerston in late 19thC to prevent the dastardly French from attacking our shores. Called follies, they seem to have done the trick so perhaps not such follies after all. Constructed 1863-71 to protect the Navy's Spithead anchorage. The pillar is high up on the E side and easily accessible without entering the fort. Original cap is in place, raised lettering; front and RHD side sight holes open. Badly chipped on one top edge, so perhaps should be classified 'slightly damaged'. 360deg views although a little limited W due to the fort itself. Nice cut BM at the main entrance.

I’m a little surprised it’s still in place as this site must get a lot of visitors. If ferry watching turns you on, then this is the place to be, otherwise the views aren’t that impressive.

Visited after finding nearby cache, GCH7XM. Scramble to get up the steep slope to the TB - guess what one of my dogs found a set of steps! Picture from the TP is of Portsmouth harbour, the Milenium Tower and a ferry departing.

Cold clear breezy afternoon, good views of Portsmouth., The Solent and Isle of Wight. Could eventually be hidden by undergrowth.

Saw this when taking a walk at Fort Gilkicker. It was a bit of a scramble getting to and from the TP. Nice view though.
