First of a few around Portsmouth before a business meeting. Hadn't done homework on this so didn't realise it was within HMS Sultan. Quite ironic - this is where my career started with the Admiralty Interview Board. Now 39 years later I can't get in the Main Gate! 😁

The car was showing Particulate Filter Blocked all the time, after bagging Haresfield Beacon (TP3627), yesterday. It had been coming on intermittently for over a month so, I put in some DPF cleaner and decided to go for a good burn down the M3 to see if it would clear it. It did! No DPF light now. So I can recommend Wynn DPF cleaner. As I was down here I thought I might as well bag some TPs that were still to be done. This was the first. And I couldnt find it. OK, it is in a MOD property but I couldnt even see it (or any goats).

A pre-arranged visit (by Carole) with personalised guided tour by WO Leon Britton based at HMS Sultan. Accompanied access to the pillar was allowed. The pillar is in good condition and guarded by three over friendly goats. Very interesting to learn the history of this and the linked fort network.

On Heritage Open Day visit. Site is within the HMS Sultan naval base. Pillar is high up atop the fort and is not included in the tour due to H&S. English Heritage tour guide might have allowed access, but couldn't find the stairway (there are 2, I tried one but door at top was locked and didn't initailly know there was another). After the tour spoke with the RN liaison officer who kindly escorted me up the other stairway, very dark and strewn with lengths of old timber - a torch was useful. Sheep graze the grassed roof area. Pillar has its original cap, with lightly indented lettering; RHS sight hole plug is degrading, the other 3 are open. 360deg views over the tree tops. A Grade II listed building constructed c1858. Very nice cut BM at the long disused E entrance to the fort; bridge over the moat virtually non-existent so a little precarious viewing and photographng it.

vgc, metal cap, shallow letters. On grassy goat-grazed roof. View fairly limited nowadays, due to trees. I booked on one of the 2011 Heritage Open Days, which included a tour of the old fort and 2 museums. The main itinerary did NOT include the trig, as there are (according to English Heritage) Health & Safety issues. And yes, need a torch.

Visited this pillar when the fort was open on the Heritage Open Day. Our guide let us to go up onto the top of the keep to log the pillar. Access was up a spiral stairway in pitch darkness so if anyone else tries a torch will definatly be handy. Plug with lightly indented letters in place. Good condition on top of one of Palmerstons Follies.
