A rather dull trudge up the mast service track, the sort of viewless walk where you need to either be with good company or be happy in your own as there's little in the way of entertainment except very tall spruce trees on either side of you. There and back was a fraction under 4 miles with 556ft of ascent. Rather wished I'd gone for a shorter but much steeper ascent from the W, I'm sure the track from Crookston North Mains then up the tree line between Hartside and Clint Hill would have been a more interesting route. No views, but trees so mature perhaps just a matter of time before this hill side is harvested? (Although the phrase 'Careful what you wish for' springs to mind...)

Used forestry track to the summit mast and the pillar is a little further on. No views from the top or most of the way up due to the plantation. Worth a 10 minute detour to the mast on top of the neighboring Clints Hill which has great 360 views to Pentland Hills / Edinburgh / Fife / North Berwick & Bass Rock / Eildons and down to the Cheviots.

Early secondary station, part of group to form an outer secondary frame around the Edinburgh block. this station was probably used later in the Jedburgh and Peebles blocks. Knee deep snow today.

There is a track starting at NT 445 566, which runs for about a mile and a half to the top of the hill. The track stops at the communications mast, with the trig being a few hundred feet further on, over some rough and boggy ground. No views from the top, unless you count north to the Dun Law wind farm, or south to the comms mast. Everything else is blocked by the trees. The best views appear when starting to walk back down. Saw some deer on the lower slopes. Trig in good condition with spider cap.

Pillar completed 28th March 1943 as a secondary station in Block NT48, Edinburgh. Just after the Edinburgh trigs were built, Hartside Hill was one of the outlying secondary stations built for Blocks NT48 and NT18. Other similar stations built at that time include Dundreich, Allermuir Hill, and West Cairn Hill. The infilling tertiary stations of Mid and East Lothian were built next, then the trig builders started on the Fife trigs across the Forth. S3091 (Hartside Hill) is in very good condition. Spider complete, retains original OS plug with engraved font. Flush bracket faces east. No view, in firebreak lined with young conifers. Follow forest track to comms mast. Original visit, 1986. Revisited and photographed 23/04/03, GRP.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 28th March 1943 costing £9.6s.0d. Later in 1943 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station NT48/7 in the Edinburgh block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1958. The trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1981. Long views from top but the recently planted woods will soon put paid to that.
