First Isle of Wight pillar. About a mile and a half south east of Fishbourne ferry port. Pulled over on verge on north side of three way junction. Footpath to north through gate and uphill about two hundred metres. Pillar easy to access next to the war memorial which is like a small chapel in a walled enclosure. Good views to south and east.

In a field at the top of the Main Road in Havenstreet, just past the junction of Firestone Copse Road. The gate into the field is opposite Wight Milk and the pillar is located right next to a WW1 War Memorial. Easy stroll up to the pillar and decent views South, East & West.

Pillar has 2 repairs to top corners, one breaking away, otherwise good; original cap in place, deeply indented lettering; 1 sight hole open. Extensive 360deg views other than NW partially obsured by edge of Firestone Copse.

Visited after a trip on the Isle of Wight Railway. The walk from Havenstreet Station, through the village, to reach the trig point is thoroughly unpleasant: fast traffic, narrow road and no pavements. The pillar is in good condition, with minor repairs having been made to chipped corners. Good views in all directions. The pillar stands next to a war memorial. An inscription reads: “TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND TO THE DEARLY LOVED MEMORY OF THEIR SECOND SON RICHARD THOMAS CYRIL 2ND LIEUT. 14 BATTERY HANTS R.H.A. BORN AUG 3RD 1896 KILLED IN ACTION AT THE BATTLE OF ROMANI EGYPT AUG 4TH 1916 AND TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THE PARISHES OF BINSTEAD & HAVENSTREET WHO ALSO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 THIS SHRINE IS DEDICATED BY JOHN & VIOLET WILLIS FLEMING OF BINSTEAD HOUSE”.

Came to this hill top whilst geocaching. Parked at the nearby road junction and made the short walk up the hill. The pillar is in good condition with all it’s metalwork in place. Views are good all round with the east and south probably the best.

In pasture field on a footpath adjacent to memorial. Original plug with slightly-indented letters. Two corners repaired on top edge. No paint. E sighthole open. Concrete base exposed 2-3" on N/W sides. Good allround views.

An expensive visit! While away the rackpack was stolen from my bike; this contained waterproof, spare top, sun glasses, puncture kit and tools. As it was late on Easter Saturday there was a rushed pedal into Newport to buy replacements from Halfords.

Visible and accessible. On public footpath. Just aim for memorial building on hill top and the pillar is next to it. Excellent viewpoint. Pillar is in good condition.

vgc, metal cap, shallow letters, in pasture S side of a kind of shrine. From S: parking by stile. My last Wight trig. The ferry back to Soton was full of muddy youngsters from the music festival - for once I was one of the cleaner passengers!

Interesting location, the trig is accompanied by an impressive memorial. Close to the Isle of Wight steam railway which can be heard quite distinctively if you are there at the right time. The pillar is a short walk from the road and a worthwhile time-filler before catching the ferry.

An interesting location, on a small hill of its own. Apparently the building is a War Memorial shrine, erected by a local squire in memory of his son and other men from nearby villages who were killed in the 1st world war.

Day trip to Isle of Wight with brother. Used Hovercraft from Southsea then walked from Ryde to Newport via Arreton and caught bus back to Ryde.
