This is my number 180! After S2780, we set off north east following the path but somehow, about halfway, got diverted. I think I frequently underestimate the distance. I later realized we were travelling too far east. We missed the crashed aircraft that might have cheered Sam up and went longer than necessary to reach the main path, coming out right next to the trig, tired and wet and a bit grumpy. Still the views were great. Many more people here. It was at this point that my boot completely came apart and I had to lash it up with a spare lace.

One of my favourite trigs in the Peak District and visited it many times on various running/navigation events. A much nicer out or back from the A57 is via Crooked Clough. At Old Woman go W and before hitting the fence line and gate go right on a superb path which stays above the Clough before taking you directly to the trig and a Nuttall (612m). Nearby is the Superfortress "Over Exposed" which crashed on 3.11.1948 killing all 13 crew. A monstrous amount of debris remains and worth visiting the site. Adjacent the trig are 3 rocks with graffiti dating back to 1871. This trig is gifted to whippets which are having a revival "Up North" or is it me?

Followed the Pennine Way beside Torside Clough round to Bleaklow Head and The Wain Stones. God it's bleak up there but it's not a bad place to be when the sun is out and it's dry underfoot. From the Wain Stones I headed directly across the peat on a bearing of *** to the pillar at Higher Shelfstones. After the featureless peat hags and groughs of Bleaklow you are suddenly rewarded with dramatic views along Doctors Gate and beyond. Trig ever so slightly damaged on two corners (outer layer of plaster worn away - see photos) and cap replaced with tarmac. Descended across the western flank of Gathering Hill where I saw a few mountain hares. Crossed the brook just west of Urchin Clough then climbed to meet Doctors Gate, following this all the way back to Old Glossop.

I give it 10 for the historical value and tremendous views; I must admire the people who chose the trig sites and those who built them. The Glossop route suggested earlier sounds good. I've been visiting the wreck for a number of years and it's sad to see fewer remains as souvenir hunters hack off bits so desecrating a protected site and hence speed up nature's erosion...
