One of six trigs bagged in the Gainsborough area today. Access to this one is down a private lane - local residents were happy for me to visit the site. It is partially hidden from view just inside a small area of woodland. As others have recorded, it appears to have been moved and is now laid on it's side with about half underground. Unable to view spider but otherwise looks in good condition. Just outside the woodland is a pig farm with views towards the industrial area on the Trent embankment.

Drove up to the house 'old barn'to ask for permission. Guy that answered knew about trig and said that he has lived there for 12yrs and people sometimes come to visit. He said he wasnt the landowner so couldn't give permission (landowner lives a few miles away) but that he also didn't mind if I went up to see it. Drove up the track to the woods as per previous entries. Couldn't actually see it from the track as i was driving, so stopped and got out. Turns out I had stopped in exactly the right place, which is approx 20/30 metres after the start of the woods (excluding the brambles before the wood). The trig is on its side a few metres from the edge of the track. Looks in good condition, but couldn't see the top. Itchy.

(235) Parked up down Mayflower Close, and then walked the track that takes you to the farm. When I explained what It was I was after visiting, the reply was "Oh, you're another one of those, are you?" :-) Permission was freely given, though I was pre-warned that everything was pretty overgrown. But not to worry, getting to the pillar wasn't too difficult even at this time of the year. An interesting trigpoint in that it's to be found toppled, and partially buried. Luckily the FB side is visible. Pillar history: Built on the 7th of October 1948. Cost and last maintained date not in the archive. Listed as destroyed in July 1968.

Good to be back on the trigging trail again and cycling away from home after several weeks out due to injury in an accident. Spoke to one house resident on way up lane. He thought it would be OK to visit when I explained my objective, although not his land, and he knew what I was searching for. The pillar took some searching for. It is alongside the track about 60 paces from the corner of the wood. It is almost at 90 degrees to the track with the top almost buried so it is very hard to spot through the vegetation. There are some views West across the Trent Valley, but areas of woodland block any in other directions.Besides two private signs passed on the way up, a gate had been shut across the acess with an even larger sign on heading back. However, a tractor and trailer was coming the other way and I received a friendly wave for opening it for him.

Having taken a picture of the spot in the field where this pillar used to stand, I was walking back along the track when I noticed the dumped pillar just inside Lea Wood! It lies with the flush bracket exposed, but soil covers the top so I didn't see the spider or plug. There was a lot of work going on both near the farm and by the track leading up past Warren Wood, apparently for a pipeline, but I guess there will still be a way up to the farm and another house. The GR is for the location of the dumped pillar.
