Parked at the nature reserve and enjoyed a walk up to the lane taking the first FP across the fields until we reached the permissive footpath, from there headed up diagonally right to the stile in the wall and soon reached the trig which is in good condition. Lovely views on a sunny day, we continued on the FP and did a loop back to the road and farm and returned back down the lane to the car. No livestock in any of the fields today.

Parked opposite St Mary's Memorial Hall in Calton then headed West out of the village via Back Ln and Stony Ln to the A523 Leek Rd. Continued down the hill to a track leading to Stoney Rock Farm. Emerged onto Common Ln where I had a brief chat to a couple in one of the houses. When asked if Milk Hill was part of their land they said "No, it belongs to a grumpy farmer but he's not normally about." Took the PROW SW across the field towards Cauldon but almost immediately then headed up to the summit of Milk Hill. Once at the summit I discovered it is now designated as permissive access (not shown on my print outs from Streetmap). Pillar is in good condition with original cap and indented lettering although face with FB is pressed up tight against barbed wire fence. Views are generally OK but rather dominated by Cauldon cement works to the SW.

The third trigpoint on a walk from The Cross Inn. Surprised that Milk Hill has not had more logs – this seems to be the first log since Sep 2008 by my mate CURRYSKRIM – the chap who got me started on this lark. Perhaps it’s the cement works and quarries that put folks off. The area has some new paths not shown on the map leading to an adjacent site with permissive access (see photo) I came down from Weaver Hill along the valley leading from Huddale – a lovely secluded dale that reminded me of the dry valleys in the York Wolds. I climbed out of the dale into the field that contains the trigpoint and came back down to the cement works down an interesting ancient track between stone walls and hedges through the site of permissive access. This track runs north from the point where the Weaver Trail meets the wood. What a surreal experience to leave Milk Hill with a megalithic burial mount and pass the towering cement works. Anyone visiting this trigpoint could park in the cement works fish ponds carpark at SK0824149440 and walk from the corner along the Weaver Trail until it meets the wood then go north up the old track then on the path up the hill through the permissive access site. Make sure that you have a look up the dale to Huddale and call in at the Yew Tree Inn at Cauldon a fantastic old pub full of old antiques and curiosities – pity it wasn’t open when I passed by.
