Parked on the Lidl car park Crossed the main road and followed signposted path. Followed path up to a wall which we crossed where it had a break in it. Then followed the wall uphill before turning right onto a clear path and onto the ridge. Then a trickier walk and scramble to eventually reach the stone trig. Great views.

Arrived in Porthmadog in style on Welsh Highland Railway. from Ffestiniog. Then took FP from retail park up NE side of hill but go on wrong route and ended up on terrace under quarry cliffs, which after quite some distance, got scary and we returned, finding a better route to the east summit. Then a very nice summit ridge. As others have said "a little gem of a hill" descended on south side from close to pillar on obvious and easy path, to pick up FP to road from Criccieth. Back to Ffestiniog by bus (3B service from outside The Australia pub in Porthmadog)

Parked in Criccieth and caught bus to Porthmadog for afternoon walk back along coast. Decided to climb Moel Y Gest first from the northern side. It proved a real nightmare with steep terrain and a rock face so had to back track and make a second attempt further east. The best route to the top is the way I came down. Leave road at SH556377 and take track northwest to SH552380 then branch right on good path to reach col (there is a post with a yellow top). Turn right on fainter path just prior to this post and continue through bracken. After a few hundred yards look for path on left which soon crosses a broken down wall with a wooden hand rail to aid. This path ascends up through bracken and later through crags and leads directly to top. My advise is not to attempt this hill from the A497 side.

As others have written, the route to this Trig offered the dual challenges of tricky terrain and remaining on the right track. We started from Lidl car park and walked along the road to the signposted path. On the way up we missed the correct path, but at least got to see the disused mining machinery, before I realised my mistake. I blame myself for not bringing my copy of Des Marshall's book of Llyn Hill walks (or taking a photo of the route description). A closer inspection of the OS map App, rather than following what instinctively seemed the right way, would have avoided the scary thoughts of a landslip of myself and a lot of rhododendrons towards the cemetery below. Once back on track, the rest of the journey was without incident, but not without a few scrambles and brambles. Brilliant at the top. Moel-y-Gest punches well above its weight. On the way down, we met a lovely couple, who had sixty year's experience of this Trig, and even they occasionally miss the path. We carried on and missed the path once more and decided to head for a grassy field near a Mountain Rescue base. From here, short track to main road and car park.

We got lost in the steep woods while trying to stick to the public footpaths but then found that by turning left and following the mossy wall it took us up onto the hillside. Then there were a few rocky steps that needed hands and feet to climb up and down. As usual, it was worth it once we made it to the trig point. Amazing views and not a breath of wind.

A troublesome bag this one. After stumbling through some of the wettest pasture, then ascending directissima I concluded after descent back to the car the best access is from the main road having parked in the large lay-by just down from the railway bridge. Go through the gated access adjacent to the woodland (GR543396), up to the PRoW. Follow the clear track past the housing on R towards and passed Bron-y-Foel. Through the gate with the lovely Welsh for "Shut the gate Please" sign on it. Continue up the track, through another gate, until you arrive in an area of open ground. A solitary slate gatepost in a field on the L will tell you when to traverse diagonally towards the Access Land. There is a vague path which becomes clearer as you near the steep ground. Your ultimate aim is a stile over the wall half way up to the summit - GR55153875. The path is now clear and direct to the summit cairn and pillar. Return the same way if in a car. The route up from the minor road to the west is best on the track into the woodland between the private gated access to a stylish house and the PRoW near the chapel which has been converted to a house. Parking is limited on this minor road. The views, as this morning, are stupendous and all the better compared to yesterday's dousing rain. 10 points awarded for the loftiness, and view point magnificence from such a lowish hill. A classic "Wainwright type fell" worth climbing.

Parked on the A497 where the railway goes over the road. Walked up track and encircled the trig eventually coming in from the east and struggled over the rock faces! Trig made from what appeared to be local stone rather than concrete. Confirmed the enscripted metal insert and had a rest before going down. Spotted a group of walkers going directly west and struggled that way with some very hazardous moves! Whole walk took us over a couple of hours in the heat!

This hill deserves to be higher than 262m! We parked to the north west on the little yellow road, headed north east and then south east to the mountain. Our line of ascent was through an old thin metal barred gate and then up the side of a wall, and proved quite scrambly. Therer's an easier path a bit further on which doesn't invo;ve any scrambling (the way we descended). Very nice hill. Pillar made of local stone, plug with raised lettering.

Built of local stone, with a heavlly (unoffically) engraved plug, narrow top. This time followed the path from the SW. Excellent views on this unexpectly clear day!

This is a lovely energetic walk up Porthmadog. The trig and spider are intact and built from local stone. Good views all round.

Visited this trig when caravaning with the kids at Garreg Goch caravan site just outside Porthmadog. Don't remember much about it now as logging this in 2012.
