Drove up to the compound and the gates were open. Parked just outside of them in the pull in. No one about so walked to the trig and back with no problem. Gave the CCTV a wave as we left as a thank you.

Strange shape for a pillar and first one of its kind I have seen. First attempt - Sunday afternoon about 3.45pm. Arrived just as lady locking gate at NJ 9808 5784 - at end of yellow road to north. Most apologetic and said I could walk up with pleasure but she didn't want to unlock the gate, as she preferred to lock up in daylight hours in order to see what she was doing. No problem. I asked a few questions and find its a BT compound and contractors are not there every day, plus compound in inaccessible. As it was raining hard, I left it for another day. Returned Tuesday 10am - gate open, so drove up to compound gate. Also unlocked (padlock dangling). Parked in rough lay-by just before gates and let myself in, watched by two contractors who happily allowed me to visit the pillar and turn my car round in the compound before leaving. Excellent and made my day! I think the key holder to the road gate must live in the new house at NJ 9818 5770, if you get locked in. Preferably visit during daylight.

Circumambulated the site, a bit short of a mile, but no weakness found... other than some back gates on W side of compound. Pillar is untapered, constructed with no FB, but there is a rivet levelling mark on the base. Spider retains an original centre cap, raised lettering. Views limited by the amount of masts, buildings etc. Pillar can be viewed from the main gates... if you do not have a proclivity for scaling 10ft high barbed-wire topped gates.

After bagging the nearby Marilyn, wandered over to Mormond Hill to look at the trig through the substantial fence. Imagine our surprise when, on our arrival, we saw the gates open. A contractor was working inside and when we asked if we could visit the trig, he said “nae bother”. Photographs and reading were quickly taken and we said thank you and left. With nozzer.

Like others couldn't reach it as it was surrounded by two high fences and the gates were locked. We didn't drive up the private road but walked from the quarry.

Spurred on by vegibaggers almost recent visit I drove up the private road to the locked gate, made some very dodgy manoeuvres to make sure the car wasn't blocking the gate and was facing back down the road and set off on foot to the trig. Once at the compound I was very disappointed to find the gate locked! Tried a few combinations but nae joy. Had a good walk around the perimeter and I can confirm fence is very secure!

Mormond behind bars!

Mormond is a primary station located 6 miles south of Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. This top is very prominent and contains a vast collection of comms masts and parabolic dishes of various sizes. On approach, access to the summit looked very uncertain, there is a security perimeter fence and CCTV cameras. However, the gate was open, the GOML notice warned of CCTV, no unauthorised personnel etc, but nobody to be seen. The trig pillar is covered by at least two CCTV cameras. The pillar is an unusual untapered squat block, similar to Benachie and the primaries on the Lossiemouth Base network. It has never had a flush bracket, and the spider appears to have been added. The spider retains an OS cap with large raised narrow font. Weather sunny.

The GOML welcoming notice. There are CCTV cameras inside. Didn't stop me, just meant they could watch me.
