Had a chat with the owner Newville farm, nice chap, helpfull and interested. I drove down the road to the next gate on the left to walk through the small wood along the track to the pillar while the chap walked through wood field of his land, says he has not seen the pillar before. Interesting to see the amount of concrete under the pillar.

The objective for today - drive from Alnwick to Coventry and bag one Trig Point in each county we pass through en-route. Planned a route to take in 14 Trigs in 14 different counties. This was #9 of 14 and met two important criteria - given our tight schedule anything more than a few minutes from being a 'roadside' would be a luxury, anything too far from our route of A19-A1-M18-M1-M42 would also be problematic. This met both those conditions, although there are several to the S of Gainsborough that would have meant less of a diversion I chose one that has been 'moved'. Its heartening that some of those TPs that are inconveniently placed for modern farming are at least preserved rather than smashed up. It was our second 'moved' in a row, and it must be said both it and Hampole Wood seem to have a more secure future than the next one we visited, Whitwell...

Damage to the top is noticeable. Pillar history: Built on the 6th of October 1948, at a cost of £8 6s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in October of 1980. Reported as destroyed in October 1995.

Joint visit with Carole. Last time we were in the area dcided not to come to this one in the dark becuase we thought it would be difficult to find. Not so - if only they were all as easy as this one. We parked at the track to the north and walked south and soon spotted the pillar standing high on its foundation. Could have actually driven right up to it. I suppose that it is a shame that it is not at it's original location but nice to know that it has not actually been destroyed. As others have said the top is somewhat damaged and the spider is long gone.

This pillar has been uprooted and moved to a small storage area adjacent to the wood on the east side of the field in which the pillar used to stand. It is easy to access via a farm track running south off Carr Lane. The top is very damaged, spider missing, but the flush bracket is intact. The GR is for the found location. I'm very grateful to peregrinus for contacting me and arranging a joint visit. Thanks also go to Norman Baxter for supplying the information on where to find this pillar.
