A quicky or so I thought en-route back to Salford, Manchester post a six night stopover in Abergynolwyn in pursuit of Aberystwyth trigs. Rhialgwm, my final 'bagging' on the Lake Vyrnwy & Llanfyllin 239 OS map. Parked off-road in a 'clearing' off the B4396 at GR 04362 19923 & right off 'took' the wrong path no great hardship as that was. Proceeding along the track East rather than the road a tad North, at GR 06369 21020 passing thro' an opening missing its gate, I continued left steeply uphill to 'bear' right through rough, pathless terrain up onto the trig. Return was 'made' pretty much in reversal of ascent route with the 'cutting' off of a corner here & there. All in all a far more demanding assault than i'd anticipated covering 5.1 miles & taking 5 minutes short of two hours.

Parked near Pentre-aber- marchnant cottage on road south of forest. Walked track to start of footpath, wasted about an hour here trying to go up on this path, too many fallen trees. Retreated back down to the track and then headed up the forest edge to reach open access that way. Managed to reach the top edge of the forest and find the track out onto the moorland. The track is just about visible a bit difficult in places. The view was very poor due to low cloud.

This one was hard work to say the least. The positives: found some good off road parking at SJ 04361 19919 where some dog walkers told me they regularly used. And the views from the top with the heather in flower were excellent. The negatives: my route! Walked NE up the track but when it reached the end of the pasture I cut up steeply through the wood onto the track through the middle thinking it would give me a more gentle ascent. Don't. It is overgrown and uneven. On exiting the wood onto open land I failed to find any real track but found instead boggy ground, ferns and other tricky vegetation. Very tricky walking with a tugging dog in one hand. When I let him off he's get lost in the ferns but didn't seem too bothered. Back down was easier but never found a track. Once into woods descended via the FP which would have been a far better way to go up.

The pillar stands on the grassy top of a heathery mountain to the west of Llanfyllin. The pillar has a metal cap with deep lettering. Part of the top surface screed is missing and it has FB 10339. The summit was reached from the forestry road to the south. A very steep track, blocked in several places by fallen trees, rises through the woods to access the hill top to the east of the trig where a path meanders through the heather towards the summit. I reached base camp near the cattle grid by walking from the bend in the minor road to the southeast following footpaths and tracks of varying degrees of definition across Craig Fach and Craig Fawr. My return route took me across the open grass land of Cilhaul and Boncyn Cammen. It would probably have been a lot easier to simply drive up the forestry road. There is a fine view from the trig. The Aran Ridge is prominent in the west with Cader Idris in the distance. The Berwyns rise up in the north. The Cambrian Mountains roll away into the distance to the southwest and in the southeast I could distinguish The Wrekin, The Breiddens, Corndon Hill and the Kerry Ridge in the hazy distance.
