Parked on Holly Bush Lane. Walked down the lane, before turning right onto Prospect Lane. The pillar used to be on the north side of Prospect Lane, a few hundred yards to the west of Prospect Farm. However, it was dug up (farm vehicles kept hitting it, due to the narrowness of Prospect Lane), and the remains of the pillar can be found at grid reference: SJ 67498 91215 under some conifers on the western boundary of Prospect Farm. A real shame that the pillar was not moved fully intact, as all that remains is the base and block with centre mark. However, given the account provided by @robinhood, the rest of the pillar may be somewhere else on the farm, given that the farmer was considering reinstating the pillar somewhere else out of the way of vehicles.

Remains of Pillar remains: base and block with centre mark

Original Location Original location was in the foreground of the photo. The remains of the pillar can be seen in the distance in front of the conifers

Apologies for the length of this log, but I have to put it in its wider context as a record for myself as well as details for other hunters. Interesting times: the start of the acceleration of the coronavirus 'crisis'. I bagged this one on the way to Altincham to meet up with my son. Getting nearer to the site I passed over a weird anachronism, Warburton Toll bridge, 12p to cross, the only local way over the River Mersey for miles around but long queues at rush hour.Take care travelling down Prospect Lane, it's very potholed. I parked my car apparently opposite where the pillar used to be, walked up to Prospect Farm to ask permission to get to it. I spotted the stump, and a stump it is, 50 yards or so away from the track in a line of conifers W of the farm buildings. No-one was in so I returned to the car and noticed a group of workers laying drains in a field. A pile of blackened trees, preserved by the waterlogged soil, was nearby. I was seen too, and ended up having a great chat with Ian, the third generation farm owner; he readily said I could visit the trig. It reinforced the need to always ask for permission, where needed, to access a trig. He had a bemused smile, and explained farm vehicles kept bumping into the trig so they decided to move it. He was concerned he shouldn't have, and was thinking about reinstalling it somewhere. I suggested near my car, but I didn't ask where the pillar was. Keep it simple. We got on to farm matters. The soil looked black and rich, like the bags of compost you get at the garden centre. I asked if it was fertile, he said it was, very much so. Underneath the topsoil was peat, good stuff. Get this. A Goole firm rented a field to grow carrots, but as the supermarket they supplied (it may begin and end with an 's', but hey, they all do it) was screwing prices down so much, the firm was finding it uneconomic and were discontinuing. Ian was thinking about renting it out to local planters for local shops. Ironically the current crop was ruined due to the recent heavy rain. I thanked Ian for his time. The trig itself. Only the stump of a base remains, there would have been no spectacular views from its original position. And on through Warburton. Have a look at the village's old church, originally Saxon, but now a strange mixture of buiding since then. The church is no longer used for services, but a clunky key is currently avaliable from a local resident (details in the porch of Warburton new chuch) to enable you to soak up the medieval wooden interior. Altrincham, like the area, seems wealthy and well-heeled, but this 'plague' is having its effects: closed bars, few people out and about, but strangely every mens and womens hairdressers had customers. As a footnote, the last booklet I flicked through in the old church was about how Warburton was affected by the Black Death. A very interesting afternoon.
