A revisit to this trigpoint as the geocache is now a YOSM and needed checking. The trigpoint was vandalised in 1998 and the Saddleworth Fell Runners resurrected it. They were looking after it for a while providing the paint but I don't know if that is still the case. They had the pillar officially renamed to Skyes Pillar with the OS which is why it appears with different names. A great location up here, just a pity there's a bit of damage to the pillar.

Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there up to Slades Rocks, and from there took the footpath which heads north east up to the pillar. The cap was missing, so I replaced it. A beautiful area that doesn't deserve the infamy that came as a result of the appalling 'moors murders' carried out by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. The pillar is very close to where the bodies of Lesley Ann Downey and Pauline Reade were found.

One of two pillars visited during a 14.3 mile hike of the Saddleworth Moor area starting from the Binn Green car park. The hike provided good views towards Manchester albeit they are limited from the site around the pillar which can be seen from miles away, partly due to its coat of white paint. A plaque on the pillar states it was erected in 1948 and cast down by vandals in 1998. It was resited by fell runners the same year. Signs of this are apparent at the base of the pillar. The centre piece of the spider is missing.

That was that loop, went and did another loop taking in Alphin Pike, I was last there in 2016. 13 miles, felt like 20, but well worth it. A couple of questions. Where does 'Pots and Pans' come from? Also, there seems to be multiple names for this trig spot - Saddleworth, Sykes Pillar, Broadstone Hill.

Followed obvious trod SE from Dick Hill monument to Alderman's Hill for spectacular views across the reservoirs to Dove Stone Moss. Then turned N, following another obvious trod across the shallow ridge of Dick Hill and Sugar Loaf, to intersect with the Oldham Way. Continuing along the Oldham Way eventually picked up a crumbling dry stone wall at the edge of the escarpment. Parallel the wall line until it turns W then followed the obvious trod to the pillar. The pillar sits atop a rock and is briefly visible from quite a distance.

Bagged this one on a circular walk from Greenfield, taking in Alphin Pike, Featherbed Moss, and Black Hill. A tough hike due to the terrain - peat bogs, high tufted grass and deep holes in the marshy ground that would just love to snap an ankle! Also got soaked walking down the dangerous A653 in heavy rain to get to this Trig. Interesting plack about vandalism on this one, worth a visit for scenery too.

A fine start from Binns Green, (£0.60!), with fine views across to Dove Stone Rocks, (and the same named puddle that claims to be a reservoir. How come the reservoirs are empty and the paths are flooded?) Sadly the edge followed soon becomes a northern such, with less impressive views. Still, the pillar easily spotted. Thanks Saddleworth, and yes, it is obviously a Walsh footprint, and judging by my own - a size 8. I've given a 7 boosted by the sneek view of Alphin Pike jusst peeping around Alderman. Pity the route back can't easily take in this edge.

I knew him through the Chew Valley Fell Race and later the New Chew navigational event which he organised. He was a good 'un. The new OS map now has it marked as Sykes Pillar.
