From the Shiel Hill pillar across very rough ground. Slightly disappointing view from the trig given the elevation. Headed back to the car via Cornish Hill and the newly refurbished footbridge over the Water Of Girvan.

Good roadside parking to NW at NX 3806 9371. Gound quite rough. Pillar sits next to a shelter cairn. Frosted up so couldn't get much of an idea of its condition, but one face has a maze of fractures, so going with the Slightly Damaged others have assess it as. Centre cap missing, no plug; sight holes not checked. Should be extensive panoramic views from here, but thin cloud sitting on the hill preventing any views.

My Corbett #54, Rosie's 53rd. On the occasion of her 5th birthday I treated Rosie to a weekend away in Galloway! Her treat consisted of her getting soaking wet, freezing cold, and seeing nowt but fog. May return one day to traverse 'The Awful Hand' but other than bagging a Corbett with a Trig Point on it, this was not a hill that lives long in the memory :-(

A month after I had first attempted the south-north traverse of "The Awful Hand" I returned when the forecast seemed promising. In fact it started with low cloud but rain, snow and wind increased all day. I had to walk on compass/map after Merrick, no visibilty until Shalloch on Minnoch by which time the wind was getting ferocious. I reached my bike ( stashed at the end of the walk and then struggled against the wind back down the hill to Glen Trool. Should have been a scoosh but head wind, the dark and a horizontal rain made it an ending I could have done without.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 12th June 1954 costing £67.6s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NX29/T22 in 1955. Levelled for height value to pillar top in also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in September 1976. SITE VISIT: Upon reaching the trig pillar on Shalloch On Minnoch (2525Ft), I can now proclaim that "with the exception of the Kintyre peninsula, I have now visited every known accessible standing OS triangulation pillar on the Scottish mainland between the line of the Great Glen and the Border with England". Also bagged many in England and beyond the Great Glen. Word of my achievement must have spread quickly. That evening as I drove through Glasgow, along the M8 and across Edinburgh, people all along the way were lighting fireworks, it was incredible, such an honour. SHALLOCH ON MINNOCH. Parked just off SE side of unclassified road at NX406954. Circuituous route via Shiel Hill and Craigmasheenie. Returned via Cairnadloch and Crawberry Rock, the latter being very boggy with stream crossings. Pillar in fair condition, numerous surface cracks. Spider centre open. Built without flush bracket. Spider leg perpendicular to a pillar edge points 63° (ENE). Vented through SW sight hole. 360° panoramic view includes Merrick.

Walked in from the road to the west. Routed from here to Tarfessock and back, giving about a 9.5 mile walk. This trig doesn't have a flush bracket - first time I've ever encountered that! Fabulous views over the Galloway Forest Park and the Clyde Coast.

Shalloch on Minnoch Some rather dark photos of the trig point. A large cumulo-nimbus was sitting over me and it dumped hail on me just after the photos were taken!
