Parked at Morrisons and took the footpath up to the pillar. This pillar did not form part of the retriangulation of Great Britain between 1936 - 1962. It was built by Ordnance Survey specifically for the National Garden Festival that was held in Stoke-on-Trent in 1986. As such, it was the last pillar they ever built! A sculpture called "A View, A Place" by Antony Gormley was placed next to the pillar for the event. Whilst the Gormley sculpture was removed after the festival ended, the pillar remains, and is now in woodland that was planted after the garden festival ended. The site was formerly occupied by the Shelton Iron, Steel & Coal Company, which closed in 1978. The garden festival was brought to the area to aid its rejuvenation, and the site was later developed into Festival Park, which was completed in 1995. Antony Gormley would later go on to sculpt the Angel of the North in 1998.

Of course oatcakes purchased whilst visiting (Six Towns-recommended), remnants of Wedgwood's Etruria factory (even the Sentinel has upped sticks I see) and then Wolstanton Church intersection after this (THE intersection point of the area I'd say - anyone local tended to use it to orientate "when all this were mines, steelworks and potteries - duck" etc etc. Middleport pottery for a brew to end another strange trip and some more pots bought in the process.

Though I last visited this trig a couple of years ago, I can add a few notes to the comments already logged here. This was built specially for the 1986 National Garden Festival, as part of a landscape created on the ridge (reclaimed from industrial dereliction) that symbolised our hills, dales and tarns. Small lakes with scree slopes, dry stone walls and stepping stones once filled the valley below the trig - and the OS built this specially as their contribution to the Festival (in early 1986). It was the last trig point they ever built - so should it be listed?! The woodland has now developed into an urban forest, but in 1986 the hilltop was the highest point of the Festival. Anthony Gormley's sculpture was a striking silhouette on the skyline and could be seen from off site too. Although he wasn't as well known in those days, his piece was removed after the Festival closed on 26th October.
