Outstanding for a fair few months on the Sheffield & Barnsley 278 OS map but today Smallage gets a 'bagging' & the map its retirement post a near 100 mile drive from & back to Salford, Manchester. Just off-road parked on the muddy pull-in alongside the barrier by the public footpath fingerpost at GR 44337 86318 ..Short road walked East to pass the equestrian centre on the right & access the drive having signage bewaring of guard dogs. With a cautious, ready to run rat-a-tat-tat on the front doors letterbox delivering no answer, around the back a much more favourable door knocker delivered what seemed like, after the quiet letterbox, a machine-gun boom-boom-boom & just having time to change into my spiked sprinting shoes, the door opened with two gents, David & Danny & a small doggy Alfie appearing. Most pleasantly permission was granted & the trig pointed-out, just visible in the hedge garden-side. Instructions given to walk down the right-hand side of the house & climb a gate further right to access the trig field-side, the flush bracket was clearly visible & the top touchable...Mascot Squeekie was able to sit atop of the trig, how clean he looked after his washing machine encounter Friday gone. 'Squeeky clean' post his 'moat' exciting plunge in the pool of water surrounding his 750th trig in Appleby-in-Westmorland, Broad Lea. David & Danny were most pleasant, highlighting this & that visible on the distant horizon. I suggested they ought clear the trig garden side...Imagine an archway cut about the trig, it'd 'make' for a most aesthtic feature to their garden! The land field-side doesn't belong to David & Danny & a nip-up without notice from the roadside gate from a two minute park there would be easily do-able! Post 'trigging' partner Pam & I Sunday luncheoned in The Robin Hood with both venue & food without fault...OS map 259 Derby, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne & Cheadle gets an 'airing' Tuesday!

Parked next to the gate that I climbed over. From there it was short uphill walk to the pillar on the right which was almost completely covered by the conifer hedge separating the field from the neighbouring house. From what could be seen it appeared to be in good condition and it retains the original spider and centre. There are views accross open fields and woodland towards what looks like a mixture of housing and an industrial estate.

Drove to location and could see hedge which has been mentioned to have swallowed trig. Signs on gate and fence of field make it clear it's private and has horses so did not climb either. There didn't happen to be anyone around to ask, or I probably would have done! Logged as we're happy we were close enough to it! Had to log as inaccessible as otherwise it says we haven't been there!

(1459) Called in at the bungalow. Met with the chap there, and he of course was used to trigbaggers visiting. Good views from his garden, and he pointed out all the local landmarks, and talk turned to nearby Orgreave and the Miners strike. The pillar can't really be viewed from his garden. As the field owner was about, it was a simple case of walking over to ask permission, which was freely given. Horses in the field, but they wasn't a problem. Alas not much of a clear view of the pillar is available - hedge just about swallowing it up, and the FB is obscured by plastic netting. Still, a nice one to bag given the friendly chats and good views. Pillar history: Built on the 14th of September 1947, cost not listed in archive. Last maintained by the OS in October of 1985.
