I have passed many times and not been able to find this trig. Looking at an old map (link below) and comparing it to a more recent map, I suspect the road used to follow the path of the bridleway to the east of the current road. It was probably re-built on top of the trig.

I've travelled along this stretch of road many times and never seen a pillar. I have an OS one-inch map No 183 edition A/*/ which shows the trigpoint on the west side of the road. This map has a full revision date of 1954-7, with major roads revised in 1964. The following map of the same series (edition B) shows it as missing. This map was fully revised in 1967. This seems to tie in with data from the OS which suggests a destruction date of 10/65. It is possible that there may be some remains hidden in the hedgerow on the bank at the side of the road. However, given the speed of the traffic at this point, it would take a brave person to investigate!
