Destroyed in an act of obscene cultural vandalism by the National Trust back in 1987, who replaced it with a toposcope! I have lost count of the number of trig pillars that have been lost to toposcopes on account of the actions of idiots who know the value of nothing. If they must have their toposcope, then there is absolutely no reason why they cannot place it adjacent to the pillar, which in many places they have done. In Michael Wood's BBC TV series, 'In Search of the Dark Ages', the old trig pillar can be seen in the opening aerial shot of the episode called 'In Search of Arthur'. That episode was made in 1979, 8 years before the pillar was destoyed. I have uploaded a screen grab, and it clearly shows that the pillar was in exactly the same position that the toposcope now occupies. On top of the tor is St Michael's Tower, which is all that remains of St Michael's Church, which was built in the 1360's, but destroyed by the repugnant Henry VIII in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. And Henry, the vile evil tyrant and pschopath, not satisfied with this this wanton act of destruction, decided that he would also have the last Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Richard Whiting, and two monks, hung, drawn and quartered on top of the tor to boot. The toposcope doubles up as a trig point. A theodolite can be mounted on top of it. St Micheal's Tower centre is also an intersected station. There is a cut benchmark on the south west face of the tower, and there is a pivot benchmark on a boulder called 'living rock' on the north side of the path / public right of way that goes up to the top of the tor from the south west. This was my second visit to Glastonbury Tor. My first was in July 1997

The pillar at this site had FB S3273 and was destroyed in July 1987 according to the OS; the replacement station is a topograph which was computed in 1988, it is sited next to St. Michael’s Tower of the ruined church at the summit of this iconic hill that is steeped in legend and some history. There was a cut bench mark near the western door of the tower and another one on what used to be the stile where the footpath meets Stone Down Lane to the north east. From the site there is a huge panorama of the Mendips, Quantocks; Brendon, Polden, Blackdown and Pennard Hills; Somerset Levels; Wiltshire and Dorset Downs. This afternoon the Tor was occupied by grazing cattle, a few tourists and a number of new age pilgrims.
