Parked by the drive to Hareden farm Up by the obvious route of bridleway then permissive footpath. Last bit of the steep ascent criss-crosses a zigzag path that may be the sledge track used to bring down the enormous quantities of peat that must have been cut from the moorland around the summit. Some impressive haggs of uncut peat left behind. Unfortunately the sunshine had gone and it was misty by the time we reached the trig, so views not as extensive as they should be.

An evening walk. I parked end of the track near Tunsall Ing and took the bridleway detouring to Long Knots (256m) and continued along the bridleway to the permitted path up Totridge Fell (496m) which was a steep pull but a very nice bit of moor for a short walk, no time to explore any further than the trig unfortunately. Then back down and a quick walk up Mellor Knoll (344m) and return via the bridleway. A beautiful evening to be up here. Trig is ever more undercut on one side as the peak erodes, depending how deep the foundation was this could fall at any time sadly.

Approached via Hareden Farm and somehow took my eye off the ball and made a navigational error and went off route by 300 metres onto Mellor Knoll. Why? A public holiday and after nobody yesterday on the fells, there was 7 people at Totridge. Totridge is about to topple. I never met Bill Smith, fell running legend and author of " Stud marks on the Summit". However, I do know that his body was found in a peat bog up here. A suspected heart attack I believe. I never feel sad when people die doing what they love, so memories of Bill's colourful life came flooding back and these hills are where he took his last breath.

I started up the public bridleway past Tunstall Ing and up through Whitemore woods to reach the steep breast of Broad Head. The last bit was along a channel through the peat hags to the precariously balanced pillar.I met a couple at the top with very wet feet from their trudge from Langden Brook, whereas I was still dry shod. Circular walk via Langden Castle and Bleadale. Soft snow on the top made for slow going, but excellent views.

To Lancashire for my cousins' 40th wedding anniversary, so one day visiting Blackpool for the first time, and one day on a walk from Dunsop Bridge struggling up the very steep sides of Totridge Fell. Superb weather so worth the effort for the excellent views, especially the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
