Parked in layby on Rownall Road and walked back to the adjoining field, double barbed wire fence so walked further to horse paddock where 2 ladies were tending the horses. They allowed us to walk across their paddocks to the junction of the walls where the trig was, another double barbed wire fence prevented us from climbing the wall so had to settle for a photo from the wall. But pleasant enough walk

Approached from Thorne Edge Road, hopped over a wall into a field with a farm house and a barn to the left of me. Walked on up the hill and continued to the end of the field and over another small wall. The trig is sat in the undergrowth but is in good condition. Horse paddocks over the the left side of the trig point. Worth a visit. It’s the closest trig point to my house (Cheddleton Resident)

re-visit. First field from South had no convenient gate and had been very roughly tilled. The next was occupied horse paddocks. Stepped over wall into grassy field by Far Rownall Cottage. Slight scramble to access next field and pillar. All fittings intact.

Parked Thorneyedge Road and took the PRoW running west to east. At the wall junction scootered north to the trig. Trig is in good condition and pretty safe on this so called "hill". Four trigs gifted to water, the stuff from the tap, until you have major pipe bursts you dont realise how millions live without access to water.

Parked near Rownall Cottage Farm. Walked south down the road towards the public right of way (PROW). However, around 50 yards from the PROW, on the right hand side, there is a low lying barbed wire fence that can be climbed over into the field. Walked up the field along the southern hedgeline to my left. You then turn right towards the pillar to the north and walk along with the hedgeline to your left. You will then find the pillar in the field to the left. Climbed over the fence into the field

Approached from Thorneyedge onto the footpath, followed the edge until we met the wall then followed into the corner. Hopped the wall and it was there.

Parked at Tomkins then walked lanes. Followed path east from Thornycroft Road with field boundary on right. At nearside of first stile kept left with field boundary then kept ahead via line of trees. Low wall and fence can be easily crossed just north of trig point. Returned to path and continued east to next road before returning to Tomkins. My approach seems to be the easiest way of access to this trig point.

2 of 3 cycle trigging S of Leek, hot sunny day. Hard work pedaling from Dunwood trig, short steep ups and downs in the heat, but glorious countryside round here made up for it. Went to Ivy Farm (marked asRownall Farm on my 1:25k map) to ask permission but no-one in. Took FP W then followed former hedgeline NNE marked by 5 trees followed by wall up to trig. Trig is in field W of the wall on the other side of barbed wire, accessible if you want to get over. Views are good, especially N and W. Had a sarny break in the shade of one of the trees, enjoying the view. On to Ipstones.

Having left Ipstones on route to Westwood Hill called in at the Cheddleton Railway Station. Trip back in time on a Sunday afternoon. Well worth a stop and visit. They have a brew shed but we did not sample the fare on this occasion. Westwood TP. this felt a little uneasy, I nipped over the metal gate in the hedge between the two bends on Rowan Rd. Both gates between the two fields heading in the trig direction were open and had rare breed sheep in. more reason to be concerned. Once in the corner of the field a relatively easy scale of the fence/wall to arrive at the pillar. All metal work intact. Reasonable views. Return via same route fortunately unchallenged.

Parked in large layby just north of Rownall Cottage Farm and walked back to Rownall Farm. Followed the path so far then bore right up and across two fields. Had similar problem as asbown but safely negotiated the barbed wire fences. Access is ok if you go to the field corner and over the walls.By passed the farm on return, much quicker.Good all round views. Could have been rough if ground was wet.

We approached this from the footpath on Thornedge Road. In hindsight I think it would have been easier from the corner of the road near spot height 256 (the house there is a ruin although the barns are still in use). The field was very muddy on the way to the trig but we did see two hares with webbed feet. Plug with indented lettering.

prosaic summit, pleasant view
