Fabulous 360° views with a line of Bowland Fell trigs included. Parked at the top of the quarry road by the picnic sight. Easy path to the left of the wind farm.

This was an easy up and down from the road up to Claughton Quarry. Up track, then grassy path to summit. Much better views than we were expecting on this clear and sunny day of the local area, the Lakes, Dales and South Pennines. A few people about.

Parked to NE (there's a couple of parking places on Moor Lane where the road enters access land by the wood). So a longer walk in than from roads to S or NW, but a pleasant, easy 2km climb up the damp moorland. Pillar now has a pebble art dog portrait lying on it, remembering Kaiser.

Another of those why haven't we been here before moments - a glorious walk up from Moor Lane by cattle grid then a circuit through Roeburndale. Stunning views not least of that dark line of the pikey edge of Bowland.

Planned to park at cattle grid (SD 5855 6302), but road closed for repairs so parked 3/4 mile further back and took a direct route over rough grass moorland. Pillar retains original centre cap, indented lettering; rear and RHS sight holes open, front plug degrading. Extensive moorland views.

Walked up from Farleton village, under the working brickworks ropeway, past the wind turbines and up a pleasant track before a dry moorland crossing to a grand viewpoint.Add sunshine, a cobweb removing wind and Man City winning a cup final = My idea of a perfect Sunday afternoon

Walked in from the north past the windmills. The earlier sunshine had gone by now but still good all round views especially the Lake District hills, the Howgills and the Yorkshire peaks.

Parked by the cattle grid s of the pillar and walked up the unmapped track which follows the wall, initially heading n then nw. Once I'd reached the closest approach of the track to the trig I hacked across the rough moor, which was dry today. The pillar's located in a small reed bed at the top of the hill with a good view of the Forest of Bowland summit ridge. The location has a very remote feel to it.

Last trig of a two day walk starting at Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley. It has been fascinating observing all of the subtle changes in the landscape along the way. This trig view was probably the most diverse of the four I visited. Morecambe Bay, the Cumbrian Fells, valley of the Lune and of course The Three Peaks. Isle of Man too on a really good day?

Was expecting a trudge from road to south, but there's a hardcore track most of the way now. Yellowed. Is that a word? The plug has been sucuritised- is that a word?- by the allen key holes being filled with no more nails or something clever.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 20th October 1948, cost unknown. Computed as secondary triangulation station SD47/41 within the Barrow-in-Furness block during 1950. Levelled for height also in 1950. Last maintained by the OS in May 1976. SITE VISIT: Pillar in good condition. Spider retains retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces 23° (NNE). Vented through SW sight hole. Excellent 360° panoramic view.

Parked in second large passing place after first cattle gride on narrow road to Winder. Easy progress on frozen ground NE to trig point on a cold and cloudy early afternoon. HuMP called Caton Moor.
