Parked near the bus stop and walked down. Thanks to previous posts I spotted the old electrical box and then saw the FBM. I had my spade with me but it was not needed.

Easily found with the disused electrical box as a guide... approx 1-2m SW of it, although the water marker post shown in another photo here is no longer present. The area is a scrubby piece of loosely thorny hedgerow with roadside verge wide enoughto park up on directly opposite the FBM. Needed some spade work to reveal it properly as barely even the top was visible. Height tag still in place, visible in previous loggers' post so unsure why they thought it was missing.

(1940) Early Sunday roadside parking. Area quite overgrown, but didn't prevent getting to where the FBM was. Soon found though some soil and brash needed to be cleared away. Only the top is exposed. Still retains it's height tag - 374.32

Visited with P61 & Brunshaw,as P61's log difficulties due to not being able to access Trigpointinguk site since logging 3rd trig of the day Bardon Hill.So made it a lot harder to find even with GPS,would have been more helpful with access to Trigpointinguk logs,instead P61 managed to get info from BMD.I still couldn't access this site on my return home.

Walk from Ticknall village hall to get Robin Hill and the Melbourne trigpoints – others have made this easy but I spent some time looking for Melbourne Common and the FBM without success – there was long grass and the hedge hadn’t been cut – suggest that you take gardening implements and the trig photos if you try to find them. I didn’t log them.

Amazingly, it has been five years since my last visit when I couldn't find the thing. However, with a GeoCache meeting in the local village tonight, a repeat attempt was definitely on the cards, especially as it has now been so valiantly exposed. However, I initially still couldn't find it in the dark and it was only when I met RoPeHe at the meeting that he gave me the definitive instructions and so, when the meeting was over, back I came - and there it was. It's good to lay a ghost....

I went to pay homage to the hard work of RoPeHe in uncovering this FBM, only to bump into another ardent trigger, Jonathan (1100plus TPs but non TPUK member), halfway though uncovering the whole thing. Had a great chat and learnt a lot. Must go back when the excavations are finished!

Now that the vegetation has died down a bit, I returned armed with prodder and digging implements. I knew from the OS sketch where to dig so, after removing a heap of concrete debris, I prodded and immediately hit solid granite. A few minutes of digging revealed the top of the FBM complete with bolt and height plate (374.32ft). Major excavation would be needed to reveal more of the pillar and the buried chamber!

Not where the co-ordinates and the OS sketch say it should be, unless it's totally buried by debris from water company work and road maintenance. The concrete frame reported by others is not in quite the right place for the FBM, so is probably something to do with the water company. Without proper excavation, still can't be sure that the FBM is definitely missing. Boring location, anyway!

I join the band of triggers who have failed to find this one. Is it there I wonder? I had a good trample round but without success. I wonder if the FBM used to live in the concrete frame between the water hydrants. I wonder if it has disappeared due to ditch digging or the stream flooding. I guess it could be in the hedgerow at the bottom of the ditch bordering the field but instinct tells me it should be on the higher ground. Later: Some Excellent work by RoPeHe has since uncovered this FBM. I think he deserves many congratulations. Must pay another visit some time.

The grid reference suggests it is further along the lane towards Ticknall but a long search failed to find it. I even went down the deadend lane on the left just before Ticknall but no luck. However, it was raining hard and I bet it's here somewhere; it needs a fine day and some time to scour the grass verges......

A long search in amongst the thorns, and water board markers/tap covers beside the road failed to uncover anything that I recognised as a bench mark. Good luck! Do you ever get the feeling that you are being followed :-) Congrats to the expedition that finally unearthed the fabled lost benchmark.
