Entering by the main west entrance, the deep datum point is easy to locate several metres to the right of the tills. The 1" bolt is easy to locate on the ridge of the lead roof, visible to the right of the CCTV camera. Great views of the minster on the way up and down plus 360° views of the York skyline.

The bolt is on the apex of the lead flashed roof. Looks little more than a smudge to the right of the CCTV camera. Can see many of the York trigs from here. If you want to see the bolt at any impressive size, bring your binoculars. Also at this station are a CENTRE and LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR, the latter destroyed 08/81. Go to Durham Cathredral to see a bigger and more impressive bolt - similar number of steps though, but a whole lot cheaper!

Having not read the previous logs and not realising it was a current passive station I did not expect the bolt to still be in situ so did not request access to the centre of the roof. The top of the tower was reached by way of 268 steps in a couple of spiral stairways within the walls of this magnificent building. Despite wet and miserable weather the roof top gives views worthy of a primary station across the city and nearby countryside
