A circular walk from Askham taking in two "stand alone" Birketts. Knipe Scar is one and for a small hill it "packs a bit of a punch". Approached from Butterwick and over the old swing bridge then straight up the front on open access. Highest point on the grassy scar sits the mighty fine ring and large bolt....can't miss it. I am gifting this to a permanent rainbow that stayed over beautiful Askham fells today. Lovely area.

I only mark this down because of the ravages of the sun on my pink legs (that's with the factor 50 on). From Bampton Grange to Rosgill - was aiming for the Shap fells then doubled back and was unable to resist the last stretch to the hill. Hazy hot sun and the gorse producing a dazzle of yellow and bright green. Sparrowhawks I think as well as buzzards, ravens, crows and jackdaws. Glorious. Spotted the ancient cross and splendid lime (?) trees in the graveyard just down the road.

Nice circular walk from Askham following the east bank of the river lowther to Whale where we followed the road around to a track passing barns and a couple of farm houses to the end of the track where you carry on in between two small plantations to easily reach the top. From here keep going to the end of the wall on the right where there is a clearing and a gate. We went through the gate turned right to Knipescar. Cracking concrete ring at the top. From here we carried on to the farm and the road back to Whale where we turned left on a path to a bridge over to the west bank of the lowther which we followed to the road back to Askham

Lovely little summit with extensive views. An alternative route to the top from the east is to park at GR 558186 on OL5 by the railway bridge on the Edge Brow side road off the A6. Makes access quicker if you are after a quick bag off the M6. Walk back to the A6 and follow the bridleway through Shapbeck Plantation and over Out Scar besides Shap Beck Quarry which is impressive if you like things industrial! Turn right when you have gone through the gate onto the open fell to find the ring at the highest point on the edge of the fell - a superb and airy lunch/tea stop overtopping a scarp. As others have said, the trig is not shown on the current OL map. Don't miss the stone circle shown on the map which is difficult to see as it is in an area of limestone pavement and particularly so when the bracken is high. On this visit there was an old wooden marker post in the middle of it - let your eyes adjust and you can see the ring - about 10yds in diameter and pretty continuous stones/banking all the way around.

I didn't know about this when I visited the summit (an English Yeaman, aka "Yeoman"). Norman Baxter mentioned it to me having visited & photographed it Feb 2006. From NB's photo, it's same design as the other ones in the area, (Seat Robert etc) i.e. concrete disc with raised outer ring, and central ?rivet. Apparently mentioned in Bill Birkett's Complete Lakelend Fells; Wainwright (Outlying Fells) mentions the summit but no mention of the trig. Nice summit, limestone.
