Nice walk along Stanage Edge ascending from Hollin Bank car park, first visiting the summit and pillar at High Neb, before returning via Stanage Pole. Although named here and on the OS maps as Stanedge, the inscription at the base of the pole states Stanage. Also the maps show the location as being a pillar, but it is a pole. Nice inscriptions around the base. Views across the Hallam Moors, along Stanage Edge, and away to Win Hill and Mam Tor.

The pole is surrounded by local stone bearing numerous carved names, dates etc. Amongst them can be seen what remains of an OS CM. Good views towards Stanedge Lodge, Redmire Reservoir and beyond towards the suburbs of Sheffield.

Stanage/Stanedge Pole has been on the 'to-do' list for some time, so happy to end the day here. Parked on Redmires Road, and then a pleasant enough walk to the trig. Initially it was just me and a chap walking his dog, but it soon got very busy. Pole easily spotted some distance away, and interesting to read up on its history. Plenty of - very - old graffiti on the surrounding rocks, along with an old pivot BM.

Although I've walked along Stanage Edge on several occasions I'd never visited Standedge Pole. My intended route across the heather from Robin Hood's Cave was closed for conservation so instead made do with an out and back from Long Causeway. An unusual trig but other than that the views aren't especially striking (just the usual upland scenery). I've recorded it as damaged due to the metal clamps around the wooden pole.

Resembling a telegraph pole on a gritstone base, this is a triangulation station but theres never been a triangulation pillar here. The pole is presumably one of a succession; the metal strips are perhaps a lightning conductor and theres a rough-cut benchmark at the base. Since theres no provenance such as an OS passive station record then maybe this site doesn't really merit a distinct entry in TP:UK albeit that its of general interest. Stanedge Pole is described in the OS benchmark database as an intersected point. Typically, these seem to be church spires, chimneys and flagstaffs but a few, usually monuments, are still marked on current OS 1:25000 maps with the familiar triangulation symbol. Local examples include Cholera Gardens, just E of Sheffield railway station, Stoodley Pike, Castle Hill near Huddersfield and Wainmans Pinnacle. A few other non-pillars (for example bolts and rivets) are similarly depicted on current maps and its unclear if these are an accidental carry-over from earlier editions where the triangulation symbol was used to denote a greater diversity of stations, or if the likes of Stanedge Pole retain a special significance.

On the ground is a 30ft high pole attached to the rock with remnants of a lightening conductor. I suspect this is in fact a sighting make similar to many church spires though why it is marked on the map as a pillar is an interesting question for others to understand.
