Then there was a very steep and rutted bit that I didnt cycled down. I am not that mad! 40miles today. My car gets 60MPG and I got through 1.5L so my MPG is twice that at 120, nice to know.

Easy parking off the A303 East Bound carriageway, either in a layby, or 50m further on there is a turning off the carriageway onto grassland at the bottom of the hill. Then a short walk up the grassy slope of a hill to the trig where it is co-located with a comms mast and a military aerial. Road noise from the 303 was quite intrusive, but the 360 deg views more than made up (scrub to the east slightly obscuring that direction). Good views over Bulford Army camp to the north. A hard frost on the ground this morning, my thermometer recorded a full -10C, and a bright red sky to the east where the cloud didn't quite meet the horizon, quite an evocative experience. The pillar has some serious cracks around the base; one of the top corners has a chunk missing; the metal cap has a composite replacement; 1 sight hole is open, the other 3 sealed. The sealant used for the sight hole beneath the FB has encroached onto the plate. This is definitely in the 'slightly damaged' category. ***Revisited 6 Nov 2014. No further deterioration of the pillar. GR gives a location for the cannon approx 6m to the SE.

The pillar stands on top of a grassy hill in Salisbury Plain. The pillar is painted white, has a plastic plug, an OS GPS plaque and FB S1504. It is situated near to several transmitter aerials and an army generator was parked close by. The trig was reached by a short walk up a track from the A303. The site is within the area of the unimproved chalk downland of the Salisbury Plain SSSI. There are 360° views of the surrounding downs from the pillar. Gunfire could be heard in the army range to the north; to the south is the nearby A303 and Boscombe Down airfield which was being circled by a small military jet. The pillar is a Grade II listed structure. It stands above a buried upturned cannon used to mark the end of the base line of the Principal Triangulation of 1794. Google Earth reveals the pillar stands inside a small triangular earthwork; I did not notice this at the time of my visit. The top of the upturned cannon at the other end of the base line can be found at SU 1422 3293. It is in a field behind a monument on the side of the A345 near Old Sarum.
