I agree with Jon that this cairn has too many stones in it to easily take apart, especially with lots of people around as there was on this fine day. Also came up from the hostel then descended and back on the road.

Walked up from the Wasdale Hall YHA taking in Whin Rigg first and also couple of Birketts. The bolt is supposed to be under the cairn at 604m 'summit', which is not the true summit of the hill, but the summit Wainwright considered the better peak, and presumably the OS reconnaissance team also thought. The cairn is too large to easily dismantle (unlike that on Iron Crag which I did a couple of days later).

According to Bill Birkett's Complete Lakeland Fells book(1994)"The trig point & cairn lie just beyond(the 609m high point)nearer the rim of the screes". There is a large cairn at this point but no sign of the trig point. Whether it is a bolt or rivet which over the years has been covered by the very wide cairn would just be a guess & i wasn't about to start dismantling it to find out!
