First of five today doing a clockwise round of H, E, F, P, G. This one's buried deep in the trees doing a good impression of being a tree trunk. With Nozzer.

Circuit of trigs (G, P, F, E, H). From E to H wasn't too bad compared to the previous trig to trig. I made my way from N57° 09.161' W4° 43.776' via the large track to N57° 08.832' W4° 43.081' then picked a route up through the trees for the last 130m, not too bad at all.

Not the best day to go for this one. Started from the very wet and muddy old military road. Walked up the zig zags and onto a straight section all the way to the junction. The higher I got the deeper the snow got. I went left at junction and then headed through the snow covers trees and found the trig. Shane it's completely surrounded by trees. I retraced my steps out of woods and back up to the junction and headed left towards the next trig.

Walked straight up it from the track. Lots of blown timber immediately beyond and I was looking for a way thru' when I almost tripped over the pillar. Good condition, with top plugged but sighting holes open.

Tricky to find but Clochandighter and coinea's co-ordinates were pretty close... Really quite impressed with my iPhone 5S's GPS capabilities in dense woodland (but it was also a clear day so very little cloud to fight through!) New GPS readings taken - average of 6 readings over 40 minutes (range of measured values 6m N/S, 7m E/W). FB faces 215deg approx. All sightholes open, bolt visible. Usual GGP markings on spider. Further pillar details and approach details to follow later...

HISTORY: One of a cluster of pillars built around 1972 for a local survey of the Great Glen. These project stations are not part of the main OSGB36 network and therefore do not appear on public OS mapping or databases. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from east. Parked in free car park at NH377096. Followed mapped tracks turning right (N) at NH368095, left (SW) at NH358098 and continued to NH355094. Then headed NW up through woods on right and kept searching until the pillar was located. At last! Found it following an extensive search. Seems further east than what was expected. On wooded slope not high spot or clearing. Vanessa in good condition. Spider has the usual GGP markings stamped into one arm, centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces southwest, compass reading 217°. All sight holes open, innards part filled with debris. Due to the density of the woods, there is no view in any direction from this pillar. Originally had direct line of sight with GGP Stations E, F, G, J and Q.

Done with spidym in the hope that two pairs of eyes would help to locate it. Hah - still couldnt find it despite spending nearly 2 hours cossing and recrossing location. Tried Robs route twice and the OS once. Doesnt help not knowing a sitka from a spruce.

Frustrating. I went for the track to S of trig and at closest the gps indicated less than 400ft. Up into trees and despite looking for a while no sign of pillar. Left when in my blundering about became worried I was losing my sense of direction.

This one was annoying. My GPS worked OK along the path. When i had approx 200 meters to trig however the gps began to loose signal and it got very dense in there. After approx an hour I had to give up as GPS was useless in trees and it was a little dark so i was defeated here. I'll be back

2nd time lucky. Rod Sladen's latest visit to OS HQ produced a location sketch and description: Follow forest road 400m NE from waterfalls, then 160m NW (approx direction). This together with a bit of luck revealed a Vanessa in vgc, but the top was covered in frozen Spruce needles hence couldn't check whether it has the usual asphalt-type plug and spider markings common to the other GG Project stations. Initially followed old Military Road from E (Jenkins Park, new housing) as far as NH357098. Here, at a double kink in the forest road, a tussocky ride mapped on 1:25k leads WSW. After maybe 130m, an obvious but narrow ride leads S into Sitkas before fading out. Follow this line until reaching top of steepish slope: follow this "scarp" R (WSW) to reach a small band of Spruce trees (obvious in Nov with their needles fallen). The pillar is at the S end of this, 3m down the slope, on rock. I headed out Northish, "with the grain" of the trees, noting compass bearing and counting paces, and my grid ref is my best estimate. A GPS may provide a better fix - or maybe not (dense trees).

At the time of my two searches (in one day), I had only a scanned image of a sketched 1960s One Inch Map, and info that I was looking for a vanessa with FlBr 11872. New info kindly provided by Richard Short (OS) via Jon Rouse. Earlier confirmation of GGPS(H) as 11872 from Rod Sladen following his visit to OSHQ. Seems I was searching too far west.
