From the N, parking lochside in car park (NH 3759 0912). Along FP and into paddock. Pillar sits on a small mound in gorse. Minor fracture runs from top to bottom and some minor chipping at end of one spider arm end. Built without a Flush Bracket. No views.

From the free car park. Walked around the south bank of the canal and then into a field on the left which didn't have horses and electric fencing in it. Easy walk from here on to the trig.

Approached from north. Followed the south side of canal westwards until reaching the gate into a horse field. One in the field there is a copse of trees around 200m to the south. The pillar is in the undergrowth there. The column has cracks but is of sound structure. The spder is plugged with asphalt and inscribed with the usual two triangles and a cross. The pillar is a 'Brander' cylinder which was built without a flush bracket, and no sight holes. The surrounding views are mainly lost to the surrounding trees.

Not having read other people's accounts I walked to the outskirts of Fort Augustus until I came to a short grassy lane with a gate into a field. I went through the gate and across to the electric fence and wall. There was no real way over the wall dorect to the pillar but following the wall down hill I came to an open gate and from there it was easy to climb up the short way to the pillar.

Was a little unsure of how to get to this one initially. Parked up at the roadside but couldn't find a route in without going through someone's garden/school grounds but then I read a log mentioning coming in from the canal path side. Brought the car round and got parked up and set off down the canal path. Got to the gate and it soon became clear that the pillar was at the top of a small rise in some trees so set off for a look. The pillar is in good condition and interesting to see the cross and triangle marks on the top of it.

Strange that this one doesn't have a flush bracket. headed through field with horses and over electric fence and wall and then to the trig. No gorse...all nice and clear.

Easier to get to that I thought, despite the electric fences! Most of the gorse at the top has gone and the pillar now mainly has a few assorted brambles for company. Has the standard Great Glen Project markings on the spider. Position logged from 4 GPS readings taken over 15 minutes. Full details and photos to follow...

There was no easy way to this one so had to jump an electric fence twice then battle through the hated Gorse to get there. No visible damage from afar but as Sagina nivalis mentioned below there are a lot of small surface cracks that can be seen closer.

Described by OS (via Rod Sladen) as a Brander, on isolation above old railway cutting, NH374089 (Gravel mound with 1ft boulders). Effectively a cylindrical pillar (Vanessa) built without FB, apparently built directly into the ground, with no square plinth such as is used for Station P (the other Brander found to date), although there could be a buried plinth. The whole mound / outcrop is covered in gorse, broom and a few trees. The area is easily identified by an obvious band of Scots pines NW side of road, although the pillar is approx 100m NW of main road. Between a paddock and a playing field, just N of a tatty restaurant. Pillar fully intact, but network of shallow cracks. The usual asphalt-type plug. Forgot to check spider for the usual Great Glen Project markings (double triangle and cross) - none evident from my photo. Grid ref estimated from 1:25k map: GPS reading needed.
