Parked on the road to the north of the pillar. Obtained permission from the owner of the site at the Forest Lodge at TF 14148 71775. Very nice man. From the Lodge, headed north west up a track, before turning south west down another track, where the pillar can be found on the right hand side of that track opposite an enormous stack of hay bales. This was RAF Bardney, which was opened on the 18th January 1943 as the home to No 9 Squadron which flew Lancaster Bombers. The base closed in 1963, but during its final 4 years between 1959-63, it was used as a Thor missile site and that is when this pillar and the Bardney East pillar (TP7843) were constructed.

Parked to the North at the site entrance close to Austacre Wood. Stopped at the security hut and asked if we could visit the trig. We were initially told No as it is on Private property. Once the lad had got the map of the airfield out and realised it wasn't on there property (the animal sheds) then he didn't really care and on we went.

After bribing the other half with an Ice-cream at the Wolds Wildlife Park Open Day she agreed to visit this Trig. It is actually very easy to just drive right up to it, so she got to touch her first ever Trig Point. So I rate it 7 out of 10 because of its disabled accessibility. As there are notices all over the place saying, "you are being watched", I didnt hunt round to see the other two sites of now missing, trigs.

(217) And after looking for Bardney East, it was time to search out Bardney West. My first extant Project Emily pillar, which has been uprooted and is standing upright. Surprising just how big these are once you can see the full height. FB number not readable, and the plug is missing.

Fifth trig on way back from visiting old uni mate for the weekend. Parked at N entrance to former RAF airfield (141 718) and spotted trig, as marked on this website's map, at the junction of two old runways. At a nearby bungalow and sheds were a couple of blokes (sheds had turkeys in them, bound for Tesco's, I was told) and asked for permission, which was readily given. Trig in surprisingly good condition despite being dug out of the ground and dumped somewhere else. All things considered, I gave it a high score. Huge mounds of baled hay piled everywhere, wondered why.

This was really an attempt to find Bardney East, but I thought I ought to revisit Bardney West too. Bardney West still stands close to the intersection of runways 02/20 and 12/30 at the north end of the site.

A joint visit with Carole. Just as we arrived so did a shooting party which included the land owner. He had no problem with us visiting the pillar but asked that we wait a few minutes whilst grown men shot some of our feathered friends. Once the carnage was over we made our way to the pillar without any problem. Stood upright and its very large foundation. Flush bracket number not deducable and the spider is missing.

I called first at Moat Farm but got no reply so visited the site. Met the farmer (friendly) on whose land this pillar stands, but his farmhouse is in Bardney, not Moat Farm. The former airfield site is split across two farms it seems. He had no knowledge of the other pillar. I can't add anything more about the FB number. The standard design of pillar top, but the plug is missing. One open sight hole. The GR is for the found position.
TP7541 The FB faces you as you approach.
TP7541 Runway concrete reclamation in progress in the background. I hope the pillar avoids this fate.

Project Emily pillar. Uprooted and standing upright approx 25m E of expected location, with spider intact (no cap or plug); FB still present but the numbers (and the letters OS) have been ground off, leaving the letters BM and a vague impression of the FB no (S98xx, most likely S9872, S9870 or S9879). On disused airfield, at runway/taxiway junction, just before bungalow. No sign of its sister pillar Bardney East, which should be at TF 14291 71455. Pasture - no sign of pillar in expected location or lying around. Visited farm: an old farm hand who had been there 15 years and visited daily, was familiar with the W pillar but had never seen the E pillar so I fear it has gone, although it would be worth tracking down the farmer himself (at Moat Ho, NE of the site).
