As the farmer probably wouldn’t appreciate me digging a 0.8 m deep hole in his field I just took a picture and moved on. Pretty sure the buried block would still be there.

Replaced the Bolnhurst pillar in 1971. Good OS sketch means this may be findable although 0.8m down near the corner of an arable field with crops in today. Some of the OS reference points have now gone - pump in nearby garden, and a concrete post - but others remain. Would probably need the farmer on side for a serious dig.

Mention on OS sketch of a 'detector' suggests a concrete ring, if so a slightly shallower target hopefully (note added in 2023).

I suppose I could pretend that I dug for ages and filled three skips full of soil before finding this one but no, I just stood at the field edge and took a photo of the sceenry like everyone else I guess.

This one is so unreachable that the OS themselves haven't reached it since 1990. Their next planned visit was supposed to be 1995 and that was ten years ago. I see no reason why it would not still be in position but since it is buried nearly a metre below the surface of a road, this one must be considered totally unreachable. However, there is one thing that caught my eye... the OS sketch for this mentions that it is a buried block "with detector"... what does this mean.... does it have a tag that may be found at a much shallower level? does it have some kind of battery powered beacon in it? or some mild radioactive source? If not then what did the OS surveyer mean when he wrote "with detector". Maybe it can be found with a metal detector because of its metal bolt but it would have to be a very strong detector to scan a metre down in to the ground...

How do you find a Buried Block 80cm under the surface? I don't think I'm going to get closer to this than a drive past the edge of the field!
