We got the tram from Douglas to Ballajora. Walked up to St. Maughold church & Maughold Head. Beautiful views. There is a free car park and public conveniences nearby.

1 inch bolt in small outcrop. 17.9m S of centre of summit cairn, 3.4m from 3-way intersection of paths. As per sketch is in line with L chimney of lighthouse building and L end of outcrop and 18.3m from same outcrop. Was buried in gorse and soil, left open. GPS match within 2m. 9.8m dimension to bench no longer valid, presumably relocated.

Spent at less 30 minutes here digging up an area we decided was the right place, it wasn't.

Parked WNW at junc of tracks (SC 4948 9165), although there is a large parking area ~100m N. Nice little track leads up to top of Maughold Head. From the GR, the Bolt would seem to be ~10m S of the summit cairn, but nothing was found today. I had the sketch but the windy Storm Barra almost prevented being upright - measuring off distances was completely impossible. And had the old wall even been identied, pacing would also have been out of the question such was the strength of the wind. ***Re-visited 26 Sep 2022 with peregrinus. After much stdying of the OS sketch, many measurements and re-measurements, and much gorse clearance and soil clearance, a 1" bolt was eventually located. The seat in the sketch is likely in a new position so cannot be used. Measured it as 17.9m from centre of cairn and 3.4m from the centre of a point where the 3 paths join.

Wasn't too bothered about finding the bolt, but what a brilliant area. Looked around the church with all it's ancient crosses, then climbed up here to look down on the lighthouse. Perfect.

There's a lot more gorse than on the photo, and I suspect that it's under a particularly viscous little bush. I didn't have shears, gloves or knife with me; otherwise I might have stood a chance! I did spend half an hour there, and had the sketch map and photo to help. But it will take a return visit with better equipment, I think!

This showed up on POI file as surface block, Passive station C1SC4991, at 249607.075, 491618.591. However the OS Trigs archive has Bolt in rock (same location within a few mm), height 118.000m. Couldnt find a bolt although I was mostly looking for a SB (while wondering why they hadnt gone for the Bolt option...). So maybe it is there somewhere on the exposed rock. Something to look for en route to the nearby slightly higher Maughold Brooghs summit. Lovely view of North Barrule.

Should be here somewhere
