A brief return to my old home town to log this, one of very few spiders that may still exist, and maybe the only accessible one. The position on the sea wall means that observations were limited to an arc approximately NE to SSE, unless the surveyor wanted to risk tombstoning! It would be interesting to know what observations were made using this spider.

The trig, SX76/T064, consists of a spider set into the top of the sea wall next to the pavement alongside Madeira Road in the Barbican area of Plymouth. It was computed in 1946 and maintained in 1974. Slapster acknowledges its existence in his 2003 log for Old Stack. The site was reached by a pleasant stroll along The Hoe and Madeira Road from my hotel on Cliff Road. The spider has a metal cap with shallow lettering. Nearby a couple of 19th century cannon lookout across the water to Mount Batten Point and some signs on the wall warn of the dangers of tombstoning. The yachts in the Cattewater can be seen to the east and Plymouth Sound is to the south. The Citadel rises up behind and to the north a small part of the modern city can be seen. A distant Dartmoor hill is on the sky line to the north east.
