Late in the day visit main door still boarded up so no 1 GL bolt, even more impressive under floodlights could see the spider stump from my car parked close by to the north.

Lincoln Cathedral is one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Europe. Well worth a visit.

(480) Seen, and indeed visited, many times before. Went on the full tour the previous year as well, but I was then unaware of the use of this Cathedral by the OS. Still very misty, so any photos taken here today didn't turn out the best. Also snagged the 1GL bolt and cut mark - which is partially hidden by a sign board.

This is my first "spider", whatever that is. A momentous day indeed :-) Bagged it from outside, on next visit I'll do tower tour and see if I can spot it.

Saw it many times at range throughout the day but in the city at night it looked most impressive lit up by floodlights.

Didn't actually enter the building, just passing on way to view the poppies at the castle. Walked all the way round the building instead!

Did the tower tour - a little expensive but a very knowledgeable and informative guide. Endless steps up with stops to look at the clock and bell chambers. The latter seen at exactly 3pm - the chimes are felt as much as heard. At the top, access onto the leaded roof is permitted as far as a yellow tape that indicates the range of the microwave transmitters. Extensive views but rather hazy so limited chance of identifying distant features. The ends of the spider are clearly visible on top of the post. Magnificent structure. Only seen it from far away until now. Didn't realise it was so big and constructed in so many phases. Will definitely have to come back for a tower tour - the view must be for miles and miles on a clear day.

Retro log. Visited back in the 1980s when i was a kid. Enjoyed Lincolnshire sausages for the first time though these days its strictly the vegetarian variety only

Great cathedral in a great position in a nice city centre, went inside too, here for the Christmas market.

The 1st of October was Lincolnshire Day, with free access to the cathedral, including the roof and tower tours. These are bookable, but the roof tours stop at the end of October for the winter season so I took the opportunity on an unusually warm October day to do this interesting tower tour. The roof tour is also worthwhile. I believe I could just glimpse a part of the metalwork of the spider mounted on the top of a sturdy length of timber that provides support for a number of emergency services radio aerials on the tower top. Close approach to the aerial's support is not permitted, presumably because of the radiation, and anyone with a pacemaker is not permitted on the tower tour! The views are great of course.
