the Ammerdown column is my most visited site on this site, as this is my twelfth visit in a row in late July or early August. There ar three stone carved panels on the column base with wording wihich is an intersting combination of Victorian arrogance and appreciation of their esteemed ancestor. It appears in English on the west panel, in Latin on the north panel and French on the east panel. On the south side is the bricked up entrance. This is what it says and I've used a tripple space to indicate a new line on the panel: THIS PILLAR, IS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE, THE GENIUS, ENERGY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS, OF, THOMAS SAMUEL JOLIFFE ESQ, LORD OF THE ADJACENT HUNDREDS OF KILMERSDON AND WELLOW, WHO - IN EVERY RELATION OF LIFE- IN THE SENATE AND ON THE SEAT OF JUSTICE, IN EXERCISING THE PECULIAR RIGHTS, AND DISCHARGING THE VARIOUS DUTIES OF AN EXTENSIVE LANDHOLDER, CONCILIATED THE REGARD AND ESTEEM, OF AN AFFLUENT AND INTELLIGENT DISTRICT. 1853, 46m, Grade II* listed. Commissioned by son of Thomas Samuel Jolliffe to commemorate the life of his father. Known as the Ammerdown Park Column, Ammerdown Lighthouse or the Jolliffe Column. Built as a near replica of Eddystone Lighthouse with a glass dome or viewing lantern which could be illuminated; this top section has now gone. Restoration work on-going on decorative stone scrolls at plinth access steps. Access from Buckland Lodge, just off A362.

time for an annual visit the Ammmerdown column but shocked and saddened to find that the big beech tree that stood sentinel at the top of the western field just as one comes out of the NW woods on the track 200m from the column was blown down in high winds very recently and still totally blocks the track. trunk base about one and a half metres in diameter, then splitting to two thick trunks continuing right next to each other and now all horizontal and staggering to see how shallow the roots are.

yet another visit of many, most unlogged. Renovations are under way and newly carved stones being replaced on some of the surrounding wall embellishments. This is my tenth year visiting Ammerdown Centre. This column visit is one as part of a group walking meditation and study of various readings to do with the Universe and the planets, from the message of The Order of the Cross by J Todd Ferrier led by cathy Oerter of Ft Myers beach Florida as part of Family/Arts and Crafts/dance gathering at Amerdown House. I noticed that this column had been entered into the database in July 2011. It is not an OS built structure so I had not logged it earlier. It was used as an intersected station and appears as a phantom trig on some maps. The Jolliffe Column is a tall, tapering column located in the higher parkland above Ammerdown House to the southeast of Radstock. The column dates from the mid 19th century and is a Grade II* listed building. It is still standing but is in rather poor condition. It stands on a terraced base set on stone steps. The entrance door and the windows are bricked up. Some of the masonry has become dislodged. The structure was formerly surmounted by a glass and cast-iron observation chamber. The site was visited on a circular walk from Terry Hill Plantation in the north along woodland and parkland tracks. The walk up the parkland track to the column had fine views to the south and west over Ammerdown House and across the eastern Mendips. Although the column is clearly damaged I presume it could still be used as a non-occupiable station.
