Spent around 30 minutes looking. The area is essentially a rocky mound with a lot of thick heather on top. The rocks are around 4-5 inches below the surface, making it impossible to differentiate between rock and any surface block that may be there when prodding. On the couple of digs I undertook, I only came across rock. My metal detector would have picked up any bolt just 4-5 inches below the surface where there is no heather, and found nothing. My best guess is that the surface block is now in an area that is covered by the thick heather, and is inaccessible. No spade could get through that, and it takes it out of range of any metal detector.

We never have any luck with blocks in heather and this one is no different. Rocky underneath makes finding targets of interest to dig difficult.

Having just done Mow Cop and the interesting area around it, this could have been nice as a pillar. Once we found out it was a surface block (I wish my satnav points of interest only showed pillars!!!) and that the previous two folk couldn't find it, I took this picture of Jon standing roughly where it should have been. There is a toposcope just up the road which is more interesting! Me, Jon

Jon where the surface block is - apparently We were not equipped to really search for the surface block and as others hadn\'t found it, we didn\'t!

Found a number of stones around the area but in the dark wasn't going to dig around them all to find the right one!

I dug for an hour, finding candidate natural rock outcrops, but nothing level as a block, and no sign of a rivet or bolt head on any natural rock. I used GE to home in on the likely location, behind the trees as on attached photos. The location is shown on the 1960s OS map - attached. Also attached, one of my rock photos. If someone else finds it, they are a better trigger than me! (There is a faint path from the lane going round the trees, where to I did not explore. It cannot be for triggers, since no one else has logged. And the location as indicated on GE - Google Earth - puts it on that path, rather than in the heather)

My digging to no avail
