Up from Ambleside. Lots of groups panting their way up the steep staircase climb, despite intermittent showers. If it's as busy as this on a February Tuesday it must be uncomfortably crowded in the summer. Trig very obvious once you go through the gate. Some views, but too murky to see the central fells clearly.

Lifted the plate and exposed the bolt, before replacing everything

Wansfell Pike has a special place in my heart for being my first Lake District top (Easter Monday 1974). It was a church walk and somebody thought it would be a good idea to take some lads from a nearby borstal along with us. As soon as the party reached the open fell, they legged it! Ambleside plod had the job of rounding them up. No such drama today, but having set off from Troutbeck's Mortal Man, I did get a bit confused. From the top of Nanny Lane, we ended up on what I now know was Baystones, which wasn't shown in my Wainwright Guide. Headed back along the ridge to reach Wansfell Pike and was very pleased to find the OS disc, which would have been out of sight when I was last here in 2007.

Spiritually Wansfell Pike is the true summit, however it is actually further east (487m) and less visited. Wansfell Pike is a cracking little hill with various routes leading to the top. A great one to explore in full from Ambleside and with magnificent views. The block is very exposed and can't be missed, it is on south side of the wall/gate and slightly below the craggy top. Midget Gems will always be Midget Gems and to rename them because of some sensitive dwarves is a bloody crime. This extra special top is for fans of MGs and the name of a team I was in once.

Had the top to myself about 15 minutes until the crowds started arriving very lucky. No wind and clear views today was misty on my previous two visits special viewpoint.
