My fourth and final trig whilst cat-sitting in St Neots. A much more pleasant walk than the other three, starting with paved roads and ProWs on a beautiful winter’s day. The mud was frozen solid. Minor road through Toseland is much quieter than the B-roads I was accustomed to. I did make one navigation error, having taken a ProW just after the hall with splendid chimneys, so as to avoid the hedge cutting machine. It ends at the corner of the field by the moat. No worries, it meant ultimately I set a PB for step count. Once at the farm entrance, I proceeded no further and was happy to see the trig from there. Lots of JCB action on the farm. Returned the way I came, although by now a thaw had set in and I was to regret forgetting to bring my walking boots. However, my Clarke’s shoes continued to serve me well and my merino wool socks kept my wet feet warm. Step count 33,574.

Pulled over on roadside by entrance to farm. Could see pillar from entrance about 100 metres to south east in harvested field. Approached farm buildings to ask if it would be ok to go to the pillar but nobody about. Went over to pillar. Spider and cap in place. High number without S prefix. Reasonable farmland views to south.

(3400) Parked on the main road. Field harvested and the pillar sits tantalisingly close to the entrance. Tried the intercom, but no reply. But with that a farm worker turned up in a lorry who gave the OK. Pillar all good - a few chips and dings aside. And still sporting all its metalwork. Centre cap with raised lettering. Pillar history: Built on the 14th of January 1966, cost not present in records. Last maintained by the OS in September of 1979.

This is my 50th Trig and what a nice bright one it is too. It has clearly had a coat of white paint since the last photo and with the field only just starting to show early crop growth it can be seen from a good long distance away. The farm hand was clearly used to visitors and permission was given to go the 50 yards or so onto the field in order to log a proper visit. Interestingly it seems to carry an odd FB number up in the 11000's with no letter 'S' preceding. It also has raised lettering on the centre cap. Decent views are obstructed by mature headgerows in the distance. The O/S website details the computing year of this Trig as late as 1965 and the height is 53.388 metres (175.16 feet).

I must admit that I would never have found this without the help of the farmer who was painting his house at the time and told me exactly where it was, as it's now invisible in a crop of tall rapeseed. Anyway, off into the rape I go, and found it eventually. Very good condition with original plug - raised letters. Still quite brightly painted. All sightholes buried. No real views except southward. When I got out I was covered from the waist down in bright yellow pollen! Off now to the St. Ives cache-bash so I've got to find a clothes brush from somewhere.....
