Climbed up from Swanston village, pretty row of whitewashed thatched Cottages. Route helpfully signposted. Blessed with clear views, although limited by very distant haze. Over twice the height of Arthur’s Seat. Fantastic views of Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills and Firth of Forth. Helpful direction indicator plinth close by. Caught number 4 bus back to Edinburgh from main road about a kilometre walk from car park next to golf club.

Multiple routes to top. Most common is from the car park at Lothianburn on Biggar Road. Reasonable hike to the top. Not to be underestimated in the winter. The Steading pub is a nice place for a pint and/or food afterwards. Views from trig across the Edinburgh and Firth of Forth.

Parked at Ski Centre country park. Sign posts help with navigation to this wonderful summit. The August Bank holiday heatwave adds credence, providing fantastic panoramic views. The trig is next to a fence, gate and summit direction plinth. Pristine white, spider missing. The temperature inversion provided brilliant views of Arthurs Seat as it gradually emerged from the cloud line. Plenty of folk out experiencing this wonderful location.

1st trig of 2019. Stayed in Travelodge at Dreghorn services over new year for Hogmanay in Edinburgh. Walked from service area following track along Howden Burn then footpath to top of Allermuir Hill and trig point .Fine dry sunny day but very cold. Great views back across the city and coast.

I do have photos somewhere of this trip. I have no date but think it was around Christmas time when visiting family and I timed the walk to reach the trig point after sunset. I went in from Castlelaw carpark up easy track. Great views over the city.

Up from Dreghorn by the Howden Burn, where as I ascended, I was passed by a running straggle of soldiers carrying hefty backpacks, descending. Some were really struggling, but they all managed to gasp out a greeting. Great lads!

Parked at the Midlothian Ski Centre (shame it was closed today) and did a lovely circular walk taking in Caerketton, Allermuir and Capelaw Hills. Although the wind chill was biting on the summit, we stood for a while taking in the stunning views across Edinburgh and beyond, including the new Queensferry Crossing. Our first venture into the Pentlands and we were very impressed with the walking and scenery, so we'll be back to explore further, hopefully when it's a wee bit warmer!

Log #379. Wasn't planning a trip into the Pentlands today, but glad I changed my mind. Parked at the ski centre, then followed the track around the western edge of the buildings. Through a gate, then zigzag route up to Caerketton Hill and on to Allermuir Hill, taking the low road on the way back to the ski centre. Pillar in decent condition, cap missing, unplugged. 11 mile walk from Castlelaw car park, walked up onto Castlelaw Hill, onto Allermuir Hill trig, out and back to Caerketton Hill, along to Capelaw Hill then over Harbour Hill, Bell's Hill and Black Hill back along valley road and path to Castlelaw car park. Started lovely and sunny, by the time we were on Black Hill it was pouring with rain. Great views from trig over Edinburgh to the Lomond Hills (tomorrows conquest).

Good condition pillar atop Allermuir Hill. Superb visibility today in all directions. FB faces north-ish with all sightholes open and bolt visible. No cap or plug present. Viewpoint indicator appears to have lost its information board....glorious long views down the Pentlands and across the whole Central Belt. Superb!

Outstanding viewpoint, and a great walk up from Swanston. Viewpoint indicator is used to provide information for the Hills of Home geocache, which lies about 140m away, once you've figued out the co-ordinates.

One of my local regulars, 6th nearest to home. Pillar built 14th March 1943. Secondary station in Block NT18. Recently repainted. OS centre plug with shallow engraved lettering was stolen from spider, winter 2001/2, Allen screws were never there so it was an easy pockle for the sticky fingered ned concerned. 25/04/2004: All four sighting holes open. Views over most of Edinburgh, including my roof. The red border collie in the pictures is called Bonnie, she didn't express much interest in the pillar. 15/05/2005: new MOD map/notice fixed to gate at summit. This is now a permitted access point seemingly! Most recent visit 15/01/2006, GRP.

Amazing birds eye views of all of the city of Edinburgh and out over the North Sea and also of the Forth Rail Bridge and over to the Fife coast. A fun little steep climb up from Hillend Ski Centre and a wee gem of a walk over the ridge from Caerketton Hill. Trig in Great condition.

A favourite walk on summer evenings after work:- from Swanston village up Allermuir, across to Caerketton and back down to Swanston. Superb views in all directions from the top. A real beauty. (Most recent visit 14/03/2009)

7/06/1983: Pillar had less paint on it in those days. Plug stolen winter 2001/2. 27/05/2003: Possible to see stud looking through open spider, all four horizontal sighting holes are open. Revisited (again) on last leg of 11 hour walk 27/05/03, GRP.

Many visits to this Edinburgh landmark... Most memorable was in 1981, a long snowy walk in the hills followed by watching Elgin Beat Meadowbank in the cup. Those were the days, you could go from the hill to the game and not get your iceaxe confiscated. (And you could still find use for an axe in the Pentlands)
