Arrived late in the day with fading light. Well done Rob and Jon. Very good find. I'd tried a few years ago with no success and put it in the “I'll do it someday” list. Quickly nipped over the fence to the location and found the turf flap thanks to the lads photos. Touched the wee rascal and retreated in a threatening snow flurry to the car. Too dark for photos.

1 inch bolt in large, slightly sloping block under an inch of turf. As per OS sketch, measure 80.8m from road wall, then a further 8.8m, the Block is then aligned 9.75m towards far corner of observatory gable end. The measurement back to the 80.8m point, we made 8m compared with OS 7.73m. Landover at observatory but no-one seen.

Parked at field gate ~80m E of Observatory entrance. Tracked up the Obs boundary, measuring from roadside wall, then hopped the fence into Obs grounds to make final measurements. Would have called in at the Obs but electronic gates closed and no-one about. OS sketch very useful, see peregrinus' log. Unobtrusive flap of turf cut and folded back to reveal the block, replaced after photographing.
