Returned with OS sketch and found block 7cm down, on its side (top face is eastward) with a large rock against the metal rod marker, which we replaced after photographing. 0.75m from road edge, 15.3m E from old straining post. Moved about 20cm E. Next to obvious gap in fence, see pics. So CJO was apparently right about it being disturbed by works.

Probed S verge, found a nice rock slab and other stone debris, farmer stopped by, said he'd been there 40 years and knew nothing of OS block, confirmed a cable trench had been dug a couple of years ago, may have gone

Toppled 11th Oct 2020  14:16  by jonglew

CJO's wheel has gone. Spent a short while forlornly probing the ground, nothing found worth a dig. Quite possibly it's still there. ***Revisited 20 Nov 2022 armed with OS sketch. Measurements made using posts from the old fenceline, which is in poor condition, but extant. The block, with a rod marked, wasn't obvious from probing as it's been turned at ~45deg so not presenting a flat surface. Nevertheless, nothing else worth digging for so went for it. Rod marker; backfilled and replaced turf. NB. 'Damaged', 'Toppled', 'Moved'? OS sketch measurements seemed to pinpoint it so going with Toppled.

On south side of road 15m East of drive to farm. GPS places the location as being in middle of narrow verge. Several trial holes dug after probing to reveal several rocks, some rubbish and a wheel. We believe that a service trench passes along the verge and has been backfilled with amoungst other things rubbish and wheels! Wheel placed against fence post in hedge as a reference marker for future visitors.

Winterseugh Wheel located some 15cm deep along with other rubbish. Fencepost against which wheel now resides behind and slightly to left of wheel.
