Very good parking at the canal bridge public access to block site, easily spotted looked like a 3 inch bolt, luckily the block landed so the bolt could be viewed ,great find ted. Benchmark on nearby railway bridge.

A short walk from Retford, along the sometimes muddy towpath of the Chesterfield canal. Bridge crossing at Whit Sunday Pie Lock then a field path on the SE side of the canal. The block was likely installed at the top of the embankment on the NW side of the track. But it can be seen without trespassing onto railway property. The block is now toppled, at the base of the embankment, in the hedge approx 3ft behind the fence, NE from a gas pipeline notice. Large bolt, dia estimated at 2.5in, facing outwards. Fortunate that the block wasn't upright as the top surface is obscured by moss and twigs. Block is readily visible in winter but might be hidden by vegetation at other times of the year.

Bing aerial suggests directly under the tracks, perhaps NW side. Parked in gateway S side of road for a pic.

(608) Active line so pretty much inaccessible. Revisit 16.2.24 Back in the area so this was added to the list. Easy parking just to the W, and access to the location is good. Block now lies at the bottom of the embankment, otherwise we'd not get to see it - though vegetation is starting to make itself known now. A great find by Ted. Also bagged P61's BM on the nearby bridge.

Active railway line by canal. It could possibly be by the plate layer's hut. Didn't venture up to see.
