Intrigued by the juxtaposition of a pillar next to an Intersected Station - why did the OS need to build a pillar if they could use the existing built structure, or - why did they give the structure a Station number when they'd built a pillar? Other examples I have visited include Peniel Heugh / Waterloo Monument near Kelso, Briedden Hill / Rodneys Monument on the Welsh Border, Malcolms Monument / Monument Hill at Langholm, Calton Hill / Nelsons Monument in Edinburgh...There must be a good reason but it eludes me as to why it might be?

One of seven trigs bagged along the A66 corridor, making my way to Keswick for the bank holiday weekend. This was the third. See my entry for the pillar for access info. The beacon is easily spotted from the roadside. Just like the pillar, it is incorporated in the boundary wall. At the time of my visit the Ukraine flag was flying from the top of the beacon.

C2C#13: next to the trig. Rather alarmed by the Old Man (aged 62 and a quarter!) climbing to the top of it, especially as we still have 70+ miles still to walk! As we subsequently discovered, excellent view of this from the top of the Castle keep.
