The pillar is on top of Ivinghoe Beacon, a stunning viewpoint at one end of the "Ridgeway" footpath which stretches across southern England. The cap on the pillar has been deliberately sealed, presumably by the same tourist body that provided the nearby map-on-a-plinth. This place is a magnet for ramblers and afternoon walkers, as well as people who like to fly model gliders.

There are some superb views from this hill, which is the start of the Icknield Way and the end of the Ridgeway. People were flying model gliders off the slope as I climbed up.

The end of the Ridgeway path and much frequented as a youngster, firstly in the late 1960's. Extensive views over the Buckinghamshire plain.
