A clear day with excellent views across Buckinghamshire and along the line of The Ridgeway to the south west. Pulled over on verge just north of the cattle grid on the road to west of the Beacon. Bit of a clamber up steep slippery chalky path. Shortest route, probably. Cap plugged. It has a National Trail notice for The Ridgeway on a plinth nearby. Small crack by FB, probably reason for slightly damaged condition.

Parked in layby to the north and took path from there to the top of the hill. Exposed chalk on path was a little slippery, but made it up without much trouble. Pillar enjoys a fantastic view in all directions, and is accompanied by what might once have been an information board but is currently just a bit of wood on a dais. Well worth a visit.

I’d visited this place many times as a child, it being a favourite picnic place of my parents but this is the first time I’ve been here since I started to log T/Ps. I was on my own up here today which wasn’t really surprising as it was cold, wet and very windy. The views, splendid on a clear summer day, were distinctly grey and hazy. Apart from the tarmac replacement for the centre plug, the T/P is in good condition although why someone saw fit to paint the flush bracket black is beyond me.

This place is a magnet for ramblers and afternoon walkers, as well as people who like to fly model gliders.
