HISTORY: Pillar completed 11th November 1949, cost not on record. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD96/T37 within the Skipton block during 1951. Levelled for height also in 1951. Last maintained by the OS in July 1976. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from the south. Ample parking by SE side of public road at SD844715. An honesty box requests a contribution towards upkeep of the footpaths etc. 50p or 1 depending on length of stay which I have no qualms about and happily paid. (I will always avoid the Pay & Display extortion rackets imposed in the surrounding towns). Followed the Pennine Way as mapped to the summit. Stone built pillar in good condition, to SE side of boundary wall. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~152. All four sight holes open but blocked with mossy debris. Full 360 panoramic view includes the other two `3-peaks`, Ingleborough and Whernside.

What can one say, this was my/our first visit and since then I/we have been up innumerable times & in every type of weather imaginable and every way possible. Its a goody but the erosion is begining to hurt - go midweek to avoid the crowds. The newish wind break is a welcome addition. On July 2006s visit we watched a local sheep eat a banana (skin and all!) - which isnt something you see everyday (wasnt from one of our group I hasten to add (the sheep or the banana!!)). The snowy photos are from 27/12/2005 visit - the distant view is by Sue (my wife) - on that occasion by the time wed reached the trig the weather was poor - cloud & close mist on the summit. No cars, train then on foot!

Its a long time ago but I was at 6th form college when we stayed a February weekend at Stainforth Youth Hostel. We all climbed Pen-y-Ghent in the snow on the Sunday. I worked out it was 1978 as we were warned off drinking alcohol, and that applied to those in the Upper Sixth as well as my year.
